Hi all! This is my first post. I've searched for this but my search skills are few.  I would like to know how to make 3-D patterns.  I made a 3-D chess set for my grandson in the Navy, and the problem is that I have 2 grandsons!  I want to make a mid-evil chess set for him.  I cannot find a pattern as I did for the Nautical themed set that I made for my sailor.  My computer skills are not great, but not beginner level either. I would appreciate your help. Thanks!

I took his post to mean he wanted to learn how to make 3-D patterns so he could make his own patterns.  I can not help with that, but I have always wondered how to do it.

Having re-read it, I think you're right. In that case I'm no help at all being a complete Numpty at that kind of stuff.  xx

Making 3D patterns use to be part drafting and part of what was thought a be a skill. With old drafting, it was broken down to taking the drawing and braking it down to views. Front, side, orthographic, top, bottom............  The skill of imagining what a piece looks like, 'use' to be tested in the military entrance test I believe called AFES. They gave a few pieces of the same and asked what the whole looked like, or gave the shape and asked what one view looked like. Some of you guys might have had this. I go back years on it and when my wife went in and I did some odd support she had that test in early 2000.   The draw up could more than likely be done with 3D software, then the two compound cuts are printed, though unless there is a written an additional software to double check cut vectors, once 3D technique would be projecting a group 0hidden cut line from each side and see if they intersect that pieces will fall out. It's going to be a learning path just to learn 3D software to do just one project. if he has old school drafting or the 'brain' to think out the views he might be able to draw two views of the chess piece.

I'm familiar with factories using the 3D software straight to CNCs that surface cut the project, so they don't have the problem of one cut side, affecting another.

I know there are many chess patterns out there and just toss a free one which could be bought a put together in a day for a gift.RJF

Billwmeyer, welcome to the Village. I don't know if you have been here a while or if you are truly a newbie. Anyway, no matter which, this is a wonderful place to hang out if you are at all interested in Scrolling. And, if Meyer is your last name, we might be related. My grandmother on my Mom's side was a Meyer too. They are very prolific. As I'm sure you have found.
