GrandpawB Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 ATTN EVERYONE! There is a site called www.Spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book w/YOUR personal info: They have pics you've posted on FB/web, your approx credit score/home value, income, age, etc. You can remove yourself by searching for you on their site to find the URL of your page, then go to the bottom of the page and clic...k on Privacy button to remove yourself. Copy & re-post to your FB or other forms you belong to. Quote
Travis Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Thanks for the heads up. I've heard of the site, but never went there. They practically had my entire life on there, including home value and income level. I removed myself from their listings. One thing to note, this is an aggregating service. Which means they're pulling publicly available data and condensing it. It really shows you how much info is out there on you. If you belong to social networks like Facebook, be sure to check your privacy levels. And be careful what info you share. Quote
Messman Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Thanks for the heads up on tis. I had to use two e-mail addresses to get all mine pages off of there as well as my wifes. Quote
Firedkm Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I would like to kn ow where they find the income! I wished I made what they are saying Quote

Travis Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I'm sure there will be a law passed sooner than later. Honestly, this kind of free information is getting out of hand. Its no wonder why identity theft is so widespread. I'm not much on conspiracy theories. But, here's what I think is going to happen, though. The internet is driven by ad revenue. Google really laid the path on how to sell advertising online. Google uses context of a website to display relevant ads to browsers of that website. More recently, they started to use a cookie on your computer to track the types of websites you frequent. So now, not only do they rely on the context of the website, but they also use your browsing history to deliver ads that are relevant to that individual (not just website). Then FB came onto the scene as a social network and began collecting information. They're changing how advertising is done and bringing it to a whole new level. Now they have your personal information. They know who exactly is behind the keyboard. They know who you are and where you live. Based on where you live, they can get a pretty good indication of your income level (folks living in Beverly Hills have a lot more money than those living in Flint, MI). They know your hobbies, types of entertainment you prefer, who you socialize with (which says a heck of a lot about you), members of your family, etc. etc. Since they know who you are, they can pull additional data from census records, tax return info, credit scores, job history, etc. Now they have all this info, they can serve you a very specific ad because they know you like to eat nachos while watching kung fu movies with your buddies on a Friday night. All of a sudden, FB (and similar sites) have a huge commodity that advertisers are willing to pay premium dollar for. Mark Zuckerberg isn't the youngest self-made billionaire for nothing. Reminds me of the old adage "He Who Controls the Information Controls the World" Quote
Dan Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Thanks a bunch for the heads up. Although I wasn't on there, my wife and kids are/were. They are being removed as I speak. Just for fun, I think I'll see how many people I can remove from their listing. Dan Quote
Dan Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Well, apparently they only let you use your email address twice to remove names. So, if you have a household of six and you are all listed, you will need three email accounts to remove everyone. Quote

Dan Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Sounds suspicious, do they then use your email address to spam you? I wouldn't doubt if they do. I guess I'll know soon enough. Quote
