Variable speed is a nice feature.. I personally rarely change a speed on a saw once I set up the saw at my comfort level of running it.. I think a 2-3 speed saw would be fine for me provided the saw has a speed doable for me LOL

The speed is not what would bother me.  The older Hegers like this one, did not have a tension release lever at the front of the upper arm.  That means you have to reach to the back of the arm to unscrew a knob to release and tighten tension... I can not imagine having to do that.  Maybe I am wrong, but I believe that is how they worked.
