I will be ready to begin my first ever Intarsia project shortly, and was wondering what is the preferable material and thickness to use as a backer board. The finished artwork will be 16" x 13". I have 3 copies of the pattern, is that sufficient? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Trevor ,i suppose ,(my opinion ) that if the intarsia is small and thin .thin backing would be appropriate.I did a dog 30" tall 28" wide that was 1/2" thick intarsia,so i chose to use 3/4" backing to fill up the body a little.Looked great when finished. :)

Hey Trevor,

I've used 1/4" plywood and 1/8" hardboard with no troubles. My projects were a bit smaller but I think 1/4" would be sufficient. Good luck with your project and post some pics when you're done.

I have only done 2 segmentation projects so far, for one I just used a piece of masonite I had available. The guardian angel I made, I glued the edges of pieces together with a polyurethane glue and gave it a good coating all over the back with the polyurethane glue and it held it together well with no backer. This would only work for a smallish project I would imagine

post-4970-134955559552_thumb.jpgThank you, guys, for your input. As usual, quick replies from some great folks! I was thinking of using 1/4" plywood, but wasn't too sure, that's why I posted the question here, so I think that's the way I'll go. Thanks again. Here's a photo of the project I'm going to try doing. I have this breed of dog, and this artwork looks just like him.
