Just got done cutting this kenny hopkins pattern out. Im super proud of it. I cut it on 1/4 berch ply. I guess my question is what do i do with it. I would really like to make a frame for it but i dont know how to go about it... im sure it needs some kind of backer but what? And do i need a jointer and planer to make a nice hard wood frame for it?  Because all i have is a table saw chop saw and a drillpress. Thanks

Nice work! I like it. Yeah, a backer might work. In the future, if you were to put a backer on your projects, cut out all interior cuts. Then glue backer on to it. After that, cut the perimeter of your piece. Everything lines up perfect that way.

As for a frame, yes, a frame would look nice. But is it "needed"? Nope.

An afterthought, on your project above, maybe the "frame"or the perimeter, could be wider.

It is a neat pattern. Great job!

Everyone has their own opinions but, if it were my project, I would just cut a backer the same size as the project
and paint the backer sky blue. You may prefer a different color or a different framing option.

Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse

Its funny because I cut a piece of 1/4 mdf to put behind it and all it did was dull out the pattern. I thought about doing just what you had said with a blue or even a red. But i was scared to pull the trigger. I really want to go all out with this one. This is the first project ive done that ive been proud of. So i figured i would see what some of the seasoned vets had to say about it!

Since you have the MDF cut, you can experiment with it. Try a Black background to make it pop, or shade white at the top (stars), red in the middle, and blue at the bottom. Or take the piece to a craft store and see how it looks with various colors of construction paper behind it.

You don't need a separate frame for this one- it's built in, you do need something to hang it with, or a kickstand for a tabletop or desk; that's what the backer will provide.

You do not need a jointer or planer to make frames, the table saw or chop saw should work just fine (with the proper setup).

Very, very nice project you've got there, kudos.

Great cutting and good suggestions given.  For future cuts you could leave more of a border around it.  Gives more options for framing or attaching hangers. For what you have, a backer a little larger than the picture, out of 1/8" or 1/4" stock, would help make the picture stand out and easier to hang.  I would give it about a 1" border all the way around.  I also like the suggestions of trying different color for flag area, the cross and filler... Lots of possibilities... Glad I don't have to decide,, my imagination is very lacking....

You really did a nice job on this...

Absolutely  beautiful cut of a newer pattern. I greatly appreciate your giving me credit for pattern design. Some great suggestions posted. Cant wait to see how you finish this. Humbly, Kenny Hopkins.

You dont need a jointer. Lowes and Home depot both sell oak, red oak, poplar, and a few other woods in 1/2"×2"× various lengths that are surfaced on all 4 sides. Using a router with a slot cutting bit and a miter box.. I use my table saw.. you can easily make a frame. As soon as I have some time. I'll put a video on my site of how I make my frames.

Dude that's awesome. I didn't even know you were on here... and you are most welcome. I would never take credit for someone elses hard work. and thank you for creating that pattern and many others on your site. I want to cut a ton of your patterns but just cant find the time between work and family. And thank you for the advise. im gonna cut it 2 more times and do something different on each one for some dudes at work that absolutely love that pattern and what it represents.  Thank you again!
