Vtg Excalibur Sommerville ID?

Hi all! Trying to decided if I should make the jump and buy this one on my local Craigslist. Asking the seller for more info, but I'd also appreciate some expert knowledge. Seems to be an 80's or 90's model? I THINK it's an EX-II. If it's a pain to get parts for then it's a pass. Seems to be an original owner as the listing says it was $2500 new. Its listed for $80.

Looks like an original EX,   As for parts, call Ray at Seyco, he was the distributor for the EX and may go that far back in time.

That was a great saw in it’s time, but I would stay away as there is no support for it these days.

I have a somewhat newer and larger model (an EX-30) of that saw and have had no problems at all with it. Both saws were designed and built by Sommerville Industries about a 15 minute drive from my home in Toronto.

 I purchased the few replacement parts it needed from Seyco and from Bear Woods.

I wouldn't sell mine for less than $800.

Does the saw have a tension lever up front?  I didn't see one and the knob in back needs some cushion on it if it is what is used to set and loosen the tension all the time... Looks like it would wear on my dainty fingers..  If I purchased that saw it would be more for the novelty of it and the fun of playing around with it. But I would not want to have it be my main scroll saw.  $2500 new?  I think maybe the decimal was miss placed,,, maybe $250 new, which was more money back in that day than it is now days.  Just my opinion.

Talked to Ray at Seyco, said they stopped making parts for it 10 years ago. Bummer.

I can't offer advice but it appears that you must live near me as I've been watching that ad on Craigslist for a while. It was $100 for a while before being lowered to $80. If I had room I might be tempted to buy it just to "restore" it.

If it were not so cheap, I would definitely say pass.  But at $80, it almost becomes disposable.  The motor connector arm that broke on my Hegner was about that price.  The problem is those clamps.  I bet the pegas clamps would fit too if you wanted to double the price of that saw.   If this becomes a door stop, your loss would be minimal, and if you get a year or 10 out of it, then you win.  Still, the clamps concern me.
