kmmcrafts Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 I'd have to measure mine... but it doesn't seem like the 20" saw has any smaller footprint... It must have.. but it sure looks big still setting next both of my 26" saws.. there's not much difference.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Rockytime Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 If you find a Hegner it will have a small triangular footprint. They are awesome saws. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

But not so sure about the stand and the platform that the saw is mounted to... They look pretty close to the same size.. Suppose they used the same platform and legs as they did the 26" saw? Instead of making a whole new platform.. I know the 16" saw is definitely smaller... But I have 2 26" saws and 1 20"... they all look big.. You maybe right though.. There could be a difference in the footprint... I never gave it a lot of thought...until now... I'm going to look closer at them when I go to the shop today and maybe measure the stand footprint.. It would just make sense that the 20 would be 6 inches shorter. It would be weird to have 6 inches of platform hanging out in front or rear. When I see either saw on C/L it is always clear to me which one I'm looking at. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

I measured the Hawk saws today.. and depending on how you have your saw set up to get it leveled to the floor your saw maybe different.. BUT..The 220VS saw is measured at 32.5 inch from the bottom spread of the saw stand from back to front.. outside of stand to outside of stand.. The BM-26 (new saw ) measured 35" ... Not a huge footprint difference between these two saws.. and they are the ones sitting next to each other... BUT.. the old Ultra 226VS is 39".. so old 220 and older 26"Ultra.. quite a difference.. but new saw Vrs. older 220 saw. pretty close match when eyeballing it across the shop as I was guessing when making my comments.. Just some useless facts.. basically.. I just knew there wasn't a huge difference. but there really is when comparing older style to older style.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Thanks Kevin for those "useless" facts. LOL. I did some looking also and it seems that the biggest difference between the 220 VS and the 226VS is in the rear aluminum frames that house the arms. They appear to be about 6" longer in the base and the table is that much longer also. That transmits to the legs on down to the floor. My 226VS Ultra has a very large footprint in my little shop. It takes up a lot of acreage. I never gave it any thought prior to buying the saw but now that have it, I can see how much more space it takes up than the Dewalt that it replaced. Anyway, now this topic has totally hijacked Cheryl's original post so I'll drop out. I hope she finds the right saw for her needs. kmmcrafts and Cheryl Davis 1 1 Quote
Cheryl Davis Posted January 21, 2020 Author Report Posted January 21, 2020 Good Morning, got back in town the other day and started my search again. Instantly found a really nice saw, Jet JWSS-18 Variable-Speed Scroll Saw w/ Stand, any advice on this brand? Seller only used a few times, asking $500, I offered $300 and he agreed on that price. Thanks for any suggestion. Quote

Thanks for any suggestion. It is a $600 saw brand new and can get for about $500 when on sale It is built off the same platform as the Dewalt and is China or taiwan. made. Maybe should say like the Pegas because of the tilting head. Dewalt does not do that. Never used the saw. When someone offers a price I always instinckly cut their price in half and go from there. Question him why he is selling?? Make sure you put it through its paces because if it is like Dewalts they have issues and can knock. I am sure others here can give you more in detail ideas. Good luck. Edited January 21, 2020 by JTTHECLOCKMAN Cheryl Davis 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 The Jet JWSS-18 ( In My Opinion ) is a better saw than the JWSS-22.. Two reasons.. The 22 saw has VERY little table support in front of the saw blade.. The 18" saw actually has more ( not much like 3/4" ) table in front of the blade than the Excalibur and Pegas saws do... so someone has heard the complaints on that issue other than Seyco.. Still short in my opinion but I would consider a Jet 18... but no way would I consider the 2-5 -2.75 inch of table in front of the blade on the 22 even if the saw was almost free.. The other issue ( I think ) they fixed was the table to blade height.. The 22 saw the table to blade height was in a fashion that if you run a reverse tooth blade none of the reverse teeth would reach the top of the table.. so there is no point in being able to use the reverse teeth. Which will bring on the fuzzies on the back of the projects.. LOL Both saws use a round blade holder / clamp much like the old style Hawk saw used.. Most people who got these saws didn't like those blade holders... They wouldn't bother me too much because I'm used to them from using the old Hawk I have.. The thing I'm most impressed with on the Jet is the upper blade clamp.. It clamps and tensions the blade in one step.. Seems like a neat set up.. but I've heard they can be fussy and if not adjusted right can cause problems.. I've messed around with the one on the showroom floor at my local tool store and i think I'd love that upper clamp.. But I think it takes someone somewhat mechanical to understand how it works and how to adjust it for optimal use.. Most people that own these saws remove the Jet clamping systems and upgrade to the Pegas clamps... then you basically have a Excalibur or Pegas type saw.. as it's basically what they are... other than the odd throat sizes and the clamps.. If you buy it.. keep in mind that you may not like the Jet clamping system and f you choose to swap it out... it's about $100 for the upgraded Pegas clamps.. so keep that in mind during your price bargaining..
