Popular Post RabidAlien Posted February 2, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted February 2, 2020 So one of my nephews, during my family's December Christmas shindig, started asking questions about scrolling and woodworking in general, and asked if it would be okay if he came over sometime and I taught him how to scroll. Of course I said "yes", not really expecting to hear from him again. Last week he texted me, wanting to make something for his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. Of course I said "yes". He sent me a rough drawing of what he was thinking of doing, I threw it together in Inkscape, and Friday he showed up. We did a quick simple cut (Superman logo) so he could get used to the saw and how it worked, then he started on the project yesterday. Behold, the next generation of woodworker addicts!!! jollyred, amazingkevin, MTCowpoke22 and 9 others 12 Quote

meflick Posted February 2, 2020 Report Posted February 2, 2020 Make sure you show us his project. Show him Steve Good’s pattern catalog and keep him interested. Glad you are able to help him learn. RabidAlien and amazingkevin 2 Quote

Glad you are able to help him learn. Most definitely will, and most definitely did! I pointed him at Steve Good's and Alex Fox's sites, and will send him the link to SSV if the scrolling bug really bites him hard. amazingkevin 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted February 2, 2020 Report Posted February 2, 2020 (edited) Nice to see. Now this is a hobby that kids can get behind safely and really appreciate because they can see instant gratification and that is what today's youth is about, NOW. Hope to see the results and hope he stays interested. If anything it puts the idea in his head for future. Edited February 2, 2020 by JTTHECLOCKMAN RabidAlien 1 Quote
Foxfold Posted February 2, 2020 Report Posted February 2, 2020 This is great, you are a 'Super Uncle', you may have to learn to share your saw though amazingkevin and RabidAlien 1 1 Quote
Rockytime Posted February 3, 2020 Report Posted February 3, 2020 Always great to see young people interested in something other than what they do with their thumbs on video games. Youngsters are not too much interested in creating things manually. You are doing him a real service! RabidAlien and amazingkevin 2 Quote

spirithorse Posted February 6, 2020 Report Posted February 6, 2020 Fantastic! A friend of mine wanted me to make something for his grand-daughter and asked if he could watch how I do it. He really seemed to be interested. I let him cut a small fretwork angel and gave that to him along with the TWO patterns he decided he wanted me to cut and that was that. He never came back to play on the saw again. I was a bit disappointed. I hope you and your nephew can enjoy some time together with shop time. God Bless! Spirithorse RabidAlien 1 Quote

I look at it as "to each their own", and go back to buzzing through boards. Quote

wombatie Posted February 23, 2020 Report Posted February 23, 2020 My grandson loved the scroll saw when he was 9, he's 17 now and doesn't even look at it, pity. Enjoy your time together. Marg RabidAlien 1 Quote
