Snow Owl

Last year I got my hands on a large amount of maple.  I started thinking about what to make and after making JGR's eagle, I decided on a snow owl.  I applied what I learned from the eagle pattern to making my own owl pattern, based on a photograph I purchased. 

She is not quite finished yet, but so far so good.

I textured the body with a dremel at high speed, so it caused little burn marks in the body.  On the top of the wings, I only textured without burn marks.

Beautiful piece of work.  Impressive that it is all maple.  How did you make the beak, eye and claws so dark?  Is that maple or some other kind of wood?

Beak and claws are Wenge, The eyes are yellow heart and Wenge

And I won a blue ribbon for it at our city’s juried art show. Tickled pink. I got a second blue ribbon for m decorative bowl. (Turned on a lathe)
