Puzzleguy Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) figured id start riding a bike again -but didn't realize the garbage picked bike i had was unusable ( the rear wheel was from a different bike -and tires had dry rot -) of course have no reason to complain about it- it was free -plus now i have alot of bike parts - alot of stuff is generic -was lucky enough to get another bike from a local gent who restored older bikes plus he had a couple of new tires and tubes for it ( he did it at his cost ) an older Schwinn USA made -27" inch --thou its not a perfect fit ( im tall ) its a great bike i love riding - ( I'm a buy USA nut - and i love vintage stuff !) God bless this man for his help - he also showed me a few things about checking out bikes and a few tips on tires etc. I found another bike that i just finished up for my wife -so now she has an even older USA Schwinn from the 1960s - kinda makes you feel good and helps my sanity ! RabidAlien Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 Schwinn made some great bikes, and vintage stuff is awesome!!! I prefer vintage for the stories behind them (if you find someone who knows the history of a piece), and the fact that most stuff back then was made to last, unlike today's built-in-obsolescence forcing you to buy more cheaply-made garbage every two or three years. amazingkevin 1 Quote
amazingkevin Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 Speaking of garbage bike I scooped one up and dropped $60 in thorn proof tires tubes and liners to keep from getting a flat. I fell off it twice turning and never tried again!!! 26 speed Quote
WayneMahler Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 I too like the old vintage things. When things were built to last. Not come from the factory with a fall apart date built in . I remember the bikes we had as boys growing up, and all the fun we had on them. Don't forget to put the baseball card in the spokes ..... LOL Quote
LarryEA Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 I like the story... brings back memories Quote
Puzzleguy Posted July 22, 2020 Author Report Posted July 22, 2020 one of the main problems Im having is that the older schwinns have unique sizes-only to them when it comes to tires - their impossible to find . ( even without this current situation ) I have like 6 schwinns -all vintage , high quality -not like the Chinese junk they sell now a days. and i believe i found all of them out on garbage day - i have 2 of them up and running and im curently working on a really nice Silver Spirit 10 speed - my favorite believe it or not is the 5 speed ( simpler -easily to ride ) its the tires that make it hard - thou tubes are pretty much generic -and they can help you run a bike for a year if the tires are so-so Quote
