I was a U.S. Army volunteer, 1959-1961. (The only fighting I ever saw was in a bar on a Friday night, but that's a story for another day).

Your story could certainly hold true yet today.  When you have thousands of soldiers on a base during piece time, they put you to doing ridiculous things.  i.e  A ring of rocks around all the trees. Even number of days, the lines racked north & south. Odd number days, east & west.  2 pairs of boots issued. The lacing style had to be alternated from one to the next. et. etc. etc.

Thanks for your story.
