GusGustin Posted January 18, 2021 Report Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) So .. I've drawn the dog .. and I want to encase it in his name with a heart .. for a friend . BRODY .. he's a good dog. About 6. Anyway .. the DOG was a breeze to draw from a picture. However - the HEART around it .. I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME MAKE A HEART or find one .. that I like. I'd like to be close to the ears and stuff .. but .. also keep most of the body? I know .. when I do a self portrait - it will most like be, or, look like a squirrel (me). Oh .. the name BRODY .. in script font ? Why not make it a bit more difficult, right? Well .. any help would be great .. Let's encase BRODY in a heart .. GusGustin Posted January 18, 2021 Author Report Posted January 18, 2021 I'm going to do him on a light oak - from a door panel on a cabinet, then, the heart will be made from OLD GROWTH Redwood .. been drying for about 30 years. And a backer of 1/8" baltic painted black. Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 19, 2021 Report Posted January 19, 2021 See if this will work for. Not sure I understood about the heart / name thing. Good looking pup though. Also include a pdf if you need to resize it. Right now it is about 11 x 11 inches. brody1.pdf new2woodwrk, GusGustin, Dan and 6 others 8 1 Quote

rdatelle Posted January 21, 2021 Report Posted January 21, 2021 Wayne, how would you cut around the inner heart. Wouldn't that fall out. I always have trouble with stuff like that. Would you need a bridge on the inner heart. Quote

Ralph I use a router and cut a dado or grove around the inside bottom the thickness of the back I intend to use. Lay the heart ( or what ever shape ) in a piece of the backer scribe it with a pencil then cut it on the scroll saw. Sounds difficult but honestly it's very simple and easy to do. Also saves from drawing the backer out and fits like a glove. Attach it the way you choose, glue, brads what ever. Hope this makes sense. rdatelle 1 Quote

I'll cut the heart out of .. walnut .. yeah .. and the name ? That will be another layer yet .. and will be out of the .. hmmmm .. walnut again .. or .. maybe redwood .. or .. well .. I'll try to figure it out .. THANKS !!! John B and WayneMahler 2 Quote

GusGustin Posted February 3, 2021 Author Report Posted February 3, 2021 OKAY ... Thanks guys for all the help on the heart on here .. I took 'em .. modified 'em a bit .. and this is what I came up with .. thank a lot !!! My buddy came and picked it up yesterday - and - was on the verge of tears .. I called him a sissy .. he told me "Tina is going to cry over this, too" So .. I guess he liked it. He asked me what he owed me .. I told him - "I don't know. Several of us in the community worked on it. There's about a ton of money in the Cedar, the clear 2" redwood for the heart, two pieces of 16x12, so, a sheet of BB ply .. not to mention the glue and finish and the hours on the saw and the sand paper." - he says, "about 1200, should do it?" I said - "we've been friends for 16 years now, I figure I still owe ya, most people don't put up with me for that long!" .. I got him laughing, anyway. I don't do this for the money - that would make it WORK - and that's a 4 letter word I quit using back in 2003. So .. thanks guys !!!! multitom and meflick 2 Quote
