I thought I'd try my hand at 3d pieces and figured what better way than to make a chess set. White pieces are pine, (will replace later with some kind of hardwood). Black are oak, (soon as I can find 2x2 cedar, I'll make a set to go with the pine). I'm learning that oak is a LOT harder to work with than pine, or even poplar. Will post more pics as more pieces are completed.

these are a work of art that you've done .And in detail too.!Glue a stick to your scrollsaw blade and add some sand paper to that for a detailed scrollsaw powered sander.Im happy for you that you've tryed this project of chess pieces.Youre friends will be shocked at you creativeity! :)

Great start there David. Can't wait to see the other pieces. If you can get your hands on some walnut, I think it cuts better than oak and will contrast light-colored wood better.

I was actually thinking about Walnut, but thought it might be harder than Oak. (No experience with hardwoods.) Can't get it locally, though. I'll have to order it. Can't wait to try. I just did my first piece in Poplar and I'm sure I'm going to complete that set as well. VERY pretty. :)

I finished the last of the Oak pieces late last night.

Possiably you could find nice hard wood on furniture :) at thrift stores at a bargain price.I laughed when OGES threw you a curve ball and suggested a playing board next.After all the hard work you just went threw with the hardwoods!lol
