I haven’t posted about a project in a while so I thought it was time.  I’m working on an end table. There a bit of a backstory ….  My wife’s sister and husband have be very generous to us over the years. In ’03 they asked that I make an end table for them in a Craftsman/Arts and Crafts style. They gave me some rough dimensions and I made them a nice table.  This is actually my own design but inspired by a piano bench I saw in a book on Arts and Crafts furniture.

Well earlier this year my brother-in-law said he’d like a matching table to put at the other end of a new sofa.

Fortunately I keep a journal of projects so I had most of the dimensions and a hand drawing.

The finished picture is the one from ’03, and the others from this build. Back then I used mortise and tenon joinery, this time I used dowels. Much easier, at least for me. There's also a pic of the stock I'm starting with. This is one of those projects where I ask myself "should I put finish on this before assembly or after?"

Thanks for reading.

Awesome work, Berry..  I have only made one piece of furniture in my life... It was very a rewarding project where I milled my wood and even used chisels to do joints... It was very rewarding work,,, but slow...

And that is exactly why I began using dowels for the joinery, well and a Domino is beyond my budget. The mortises for the slats I made at the table saw.

Nice looking table. Like the way you did the legs with the tapering. Dowels make it quick and are stable and strong joints. When I build furniture the customers get a cd / dvd of photos of the process and joinery. So I advertise 100 % by hand sand that is how I do it. I'm sure when you finish you have a lot to be proud of. If you can finish before assembly, comes out a lot better and doesn't require a ton of extra work. Great job on this.
