Boradryn Posted July 24, 2011 Report Posted July 24, 2011 I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but here goes: Not long ago, my neighbor gave me a box of hardwood scraps he picked up at a yard sale. In it was a bit of wood that no one I know can identify. I finally got around to taking a picture in hopes that someone here can help. It cuts hard, burns easily, and the sawdust sticks to everything so it might be a bit oily. I'm not sure.I need to know what this is so I can see if I can order more from somewhere. It would be GREAT for some of my projects. Quote
Boradryn Posted July 24, 2011 Author Report Posted July 24, 2011 Thank you. Is that expensive wood? I made a Christmas ornament from it for the neighbor who gave me the wood. He and his wife have decided to make a special place to hang the ornaments I make for them. Quote
wdkits1 Posted July 24, 2011 Report Posted July 24, 2011 Depends on where you get it. I pay $8.00 a BF for padauk here on the East coast which I don't consider expensive compared to some of the other exotics that I use. One thing about padauk is that it will not hold it's color over time, turning a reddish brown when exposed to UV light and air. Quote
Boradryn Posted July 25, 2011 Author Report Posted July 25, 2011 I found it online for $6.50/BF, at 4/4, or $7.10 at 8/4 but I don't remember the site. That's expensive on my budget. It also changes colour when oiled. The neighbor gave me another armload of hardwood in exchange for the ornament, also unidentified. I'll get around to that one soon. Quote
Clayton717 Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 I agree with Mike. Its looks like paduak. Quote
Boradryn Posted July 25, 2011 Author Report Posted July 25, 2011 I found pics of padauk online that have the very same grain pattern, colour, and everything visual that I could think to compare. (chuckles) I agree that that is exactly what it is. Thanks guys. I've made three Xmas ornaments from it so far. (Pieces are not much bigger than that.) PIcs are in the bragging rights topic titled "Christmas ornaments". Quote
