smitty0312 Posted April 4, 2022 Report Posted April 4, 2022 I got this from our local Amish sawmill this morning, it's 3" thick, will have to dry since it is green wood, deciding what I should make with it. wombatie and TexasDIY 2 Quote

spirithorse Posted April 24, 2022 Report Posted April 24, 2022 Hi, @Loskoppie A lot depends on the species of wood but, for general conversation, I have always read that you should place sticks between layers of your green wood to encourage air flow between all the boards you are drying. Some sources I read said keep the wood a minimum of 18 inches off the ground. Some sources say you can coat the ends of each board to keep the ends from checking and splitting. The best place to try to dry wood naturally in this manner is in an open bin or shed so air flows through but, it has a roof to keep the elements off the wood. Drying wood in direct sunlight is usually not very effective because the wood will dry out too quickly which results in cracking and warping. God Bless! Spirithorse Loskoppie 1 Quote

Barbara Yes place small sticks between the boards. I also seal the ends with green wood sealer. If the wood dries too fast it will crack. The rule of thumb is it takes one year for each inch of thickness. Loskoppie 1 Quote
