bighaas70 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Do any of you have any ideas/patterns to make frames for cut-outs and pictures done in 1/8" wood? I have seen some of the amazing stuff you guys put around your pictures and I figure.................."why re-invent the wheel?!" I was thinking about using some oak molding, etc..............let the expert advice begin! Gordie p.s. Got the cut-out done that Messman helped me with for my dad. Looks good. Just needs a frame and backing............hense the above question! Quote
Travis Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 The way I do it is that I make sure everything I cut is 8x10" so I can buy ready-made frames. I get mine at WalMart for $3/frame. The frame isn't thick enough to hold the plywood, but a little creative duct taping gets the job done pretty well (nobody sees the back anyway). If you wanted to make your own frame, look for chair rail made to cover the edge of wainscoting (located with the floor trim). This trim has a little dado or lip that will fit over the edge of your cutting really nice. You can use Plexiglass from the home center and whatever backer you want. I usually use black felt as my backer. If you don't have a power miter saw, you can buy a miter box for you handsaw for $10 or so. That way you get nice 45 degree angles. Quote
bighaas70 Posted April 21, 2009 Author Report Posted April 21, 2009 Thanks Travis. I have been looking at pre-made frames. I guess that is probably the best way to go. I have made a couple before with basecove and just 45ed them with the miter saw. I ripped an 1/8" kerf into the molding and it looked okay. Problem is that the backer didn't want to work correctly. I will play around and see what happens. Gordie Quote
