savethebeer Posted June 5, 2022 Report Posted June 5, 2022 Many years ago I bought a cheap set of files (10 different shapes for about €5) and they did me fine for a few years. Then I bought the ones above, 5 diamond coated for €16, You cab see the build up of paint, stain etc on the blades. How long do these last normally and has anyone a way of cleaning the blades? I've also decided to experiment with watercolouring pencils. The above ones are my first real effort at adding colour. I haven't watered to colours yet. (the top 3 are gnomes that I got in Tyger just to try something new) Do I use warm water, do I just put the water on with a paint brush and leave it to dry or do I paint the water on and try to paint out the pencil marks? I'm also in the middle of doing Alex Fox's Advent calenders, and a few other items. I'm spending more time looking after an aging Dad so I'm trying to get all the Christmas pressies done in plenty of time. Bob OCtoolguy, crupiea and new2woodwrk 3 Quote
John B Posted June 5, 2022 Report Posted June 5, 2022 (edited) I have that same set of files, Got them for sharpening small router bits etc. They work OK. Have had mine for years. I would never of thought to use them for timber. this may help out with the coloured pencils Bob https://www.kingsframingandartgallery.com/blog/post/how-to-use-watercolor-pencils Edited June 5, 2022 by John B OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Phil Royer Posted June 5, 2022 Report Posted June 5, 2022 You might try cleaning the rifflers with a toothbrush (your wife's). Also a brass or other wire brush. Use with some water and soap or detergent. If they are beyond use, you might try various solvent or possibly a small torch and burn the paint out. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Millwab Posted June 6, 2022 Report Posted June 6, 2022 A file card is designed to do just what you’re looking for. It has short wire bristles designed to get in between the teeth of the file and clean out accumulated debris. Quote
savethebeer Posted June 6, 2022 Author Report Posted June 6, 2022 plenty for me to try, Thanks. Thanks John, I'll have a look. the files are great for getting rid of fuzzies cause they fit in tiny gaps and don't put too much pressure on the delicate areas. There's only me Phil, she took her brush with her. I'll look out for a file card next time I'm out and about. John B 1 Quote
