I started with a 4” by 6” by 10” piece of cherry. Turn it between centers until the 4” sides are rounded then made a tenon on the bottom. Then start to curve top to bottom until you get the flats where you want them. It is 3.5” by 5” by 8” tall. The shorter you make it the more round the flats will be.

This is not mine but will give you an idea of how it will look if width and height are close to the same.

Beautiful piece (yours and the other you show).  I will have to see if hubby, the more experienced turner, understands what you mean on how to do it.  As a newbie turner who hasn't turned much yet, its a little muddling to me how you get two sides flat! ☺️

Go on YouTube and type Tim Yoder in the search. He shows how to turn one in one of his videos. His is the picture of the one I said wasn’t mine.
