And I have another question, i have always loved seeing the boxes that you post.  I always wonder where you get the beautiful cedar.  All the red cedar I look at is so full of knot as to be worthless unless you want a lot of knots.

I get my cedar at a local wholesale building supplier.  It is 1" and 2" thick and I resaw them to 3/8" for the boxes. I work around the knots for the top of the boxes.  For the bottoms I use the boards with knots and voids by filling them in a mixture of glue (or shellack) and sanding dust.

Jim,

I have tried a few simple inlays, they look ok but nothing to write home about, what i really like to learn and work on is a pattern with a few different color woods, that seems to set the project off, RJ

RJ, I have a pattern for a small oval box with an inlaid ladybug on the lid. It's one that I've been wanting to make. Let me know if you are interested. You can either paint the ladybug pieces or try different colored woods. I'll shoot you a pic tomorrow if you want it.

Just a note.  Your woods do not have to be the same thichness to do inlay, if you are going to cover the back.  I am working on a piece, and one piece of wood it is 3/8" think the other is 1/4".   I was able to accomplish what I wanted.  The back of this, when complete will be covered.  The smudge under the "R" will go away, just do not touch your board after eating a piece of pizza until you wash a couple times with soap and water!

Try doing your lettering in inlay in cursive.  Much more forgiving than block lettering.  I print my patterns for this in word using "Lucinda handwriting" font. There is a double line option I use with this font.image.thumb.jpeg.8b1906b8cff802f5253537e0ed88188f.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.8b1906b8cff802f5253537e0ed88188f.jpeg
