Hi! I need help with saving basic patterns that I made in Inkscape. Iam having trouble saving my created patterns such as a cross and ornaments. when I import them to add a new name  or image with the union tool it will not union. How can I fix this problem?  Thanks  Joncross.svg

I don't know much about Inkscape but the object you have is solid object like if you draw a square (look at the nodes).  You can take a name and group with the cross and it then is a single object.  CTRL+G.

I took the cross exported to a png, imported and then traced the object.  You then can union with a name.

All the technicalities I have no idea.

Is that what you are looking for.

Hi John, If you are trying to make a union of objects they have all to be the same, If you clone a

object you need to change it so that you can group things together and union them, If they aren't

the same you can't union them together o.k. Bob  ;)

Basically, what you have is a solid shape (the cross).  The outline of the shape is what you want your pattern to look like and the inside is transparent/empty.  What happens if you Union a shape on top of that, it'll union the solid shape of the cross, not the outline.

So what you need to do is make the outline your shape.  To do that, select your object and choose Path>Stroke To Path.  Now only the outline is your shape, and you can union another shape onto that outline.

It's really hard to explain, but give it a go and you'll see.  ;)
