Travis Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 What kinds of woods are typically used for pyrography? Quote
BuLLdoGG Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 the best wood to pyrograph is sycamore Quote
blame Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 when i use to do it i used mainly Basswood along with Pine and White Oak. found that the latter two where difficult to burn due to the difference in the hardness of the growth rings. Quote
Vector01 Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 I've used pine, basswood and poplar. Pine has a tendency to "sweat" sap which can make it diffulcult to get an even shade. I like the basswood and poplar. Quote
Christina Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 I think that it is a personal choice. Personally I love using pine..........specifically because of the sap. You never know what you are going to get when you start and I love that! It's the same reason I use regular carbon paper to transfer my designs to the wood..............you get little flares, as you are burning, which can give some really great effects. I've used all kinds of wood for pyrography.......but pine remains my favorite. Christina Quote
ugsduck Posted August 2, 2009 Report Posted August 2, 2009 I use sycamore and birch plwood - mainly because blanks are easily obtainable here in the UK. I would not use Pine because the sap gives off toxic fumes when burnt. Please look around the woodburning/pyrography sites for the warnings. Quote
Christina Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Thanks Ugsduck..........I'm aware of the toxic fumes.......but I work in a well ventilated area and I wear a mask whenever woodburning......I have asthma so have to be really careful anyway. But it's a good point to bring up in case someone else doesn't know! A lot of the woods we work with in scrolling are toxic.........fumes and sawdust both. So it's always prudent to wear respiratory protection! Christina Quote
scrolldad Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 CHRISTINA' i have used lauan and white ash 1/4" panels made a saw from lauan and walnut turned out beautiful, i work with LOWES been with them about 18 years if you go to the managers of that dept. usually they will cut the price on damaged panels. i personally have used their 1" soild pine panels, made 2 huge coffee tables i have a picture of the 1 i made of wolves running in the wind if i can find it i WILL post it i love to wood burn and use my scroll saw in the same picture or project that i do. i have posted a deer in a wild rose in the new patten it is made of lanan and walnut. to get rid of saw marks i didnt sand i used my wood burner to make my deer come to life, the lauan burnt and then walnut background just set it off enjoy scrolldad wise va Quote
Dave M Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 I use Basswood, pine and poplar. I like the look of the pine with the sap because it gives a bit of a glow to the burn. I am doing a lot of the boxes lately and I'm not always sure what they make them with. Some are marked but most aren't. Quote
Helenm2807 Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 I use anything that I can get a really smooth surface on. I normally use birch ply (because I can get free offcuts from work ) for pictures, poems etc but did the clock (in the clock competion) in spalted pine which was interesting. I did a really lovely picture of a diving otter on a piece of spalted elm once, but discovered when I'd finished it (having spent hours on it) that you couldn't see it from more than a foot away This one was on spalted poplar. cjswoodcrafts Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 when i first began wood burning, i was using sandeply wood, easy to work with, then i started using pine, as of now i use pine for all my wood burnings and relief carvings, and scroll sawing, unless customer wants a different type of wood, to see my work, go to www.cjswoodcrafts.com.
