Multifasited Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Sitting here waiting for the weather to warm ,I started to make a list of things to do when that time comes ,We spend a lot of time outdoors ,one of the things I stumbled on to late last summer I thought I would share was about flies on the porch ,and ants We have a large covered porch and live in the country ,We have a dog ,MY Buddy (Pork Chop ) ,he's Family ,lives in the house ,We have several nieghbor cats that visit ,He tolerates thier visits as long as we don't pet them or pay too much attention to them ,My wife started feeding them .Here came the problem ,Ants started finding thier food ,to the point The pan was covered with ants ,Me ,to the rescue ,I put the pan 8"x 13" on a tray and added water to the tray ,making a moat ,walaa ,I had to put a small rag under the pan in the tray to keep the pan floating to the edge of the moat giving them access to the catfood ,Walaa no more ants ,with out the ants ,flys became a major issue ,Me to the rescue ,I put liquid dish soap all around the edge of the tray and let it go into the water , NOW ,that did not deswade the flys ,But ,I soon noticed a large decrease of flys elsewhere on the porch,my wife went to add more cat food to the pan ,and ask why there were all these dead flies around the tray ,sure enough there were thirty by count dead flies lieing around the moat and on the trays edge ,So I set the pan a side washed the tray and stainless steel table it sits on ,(Ihad to put it up there because Pork chop liked it too much ,and the vet said it was not good for him) and reset the moat and added more soap .I have bought fly strips and fly catchers for years ,(not much good) the cat food moat caught and killed more flies in two days then all other methods I've tried all year. So I pass that along for those who can to try ! The cat food seems to bunch the flies ,the soap sends them to the happy hunting ground ,cats are happy having ant free food ,wifes happy & ants went some where else ,Sometime dumb luck trumps comm.fly traps .I keep it that way all year round now ,no flies in the winter but keeps the ants away as they are active yr. round on any warmer day ! It" the best Fly trap I have ever seen ,once a week I clean it and reset it ,amazing results (created by just Dumb luck !) TRY IT- let me know how it works when the time finally gets here ! jellis, Rob Roy and Phantom Scroller 3 Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted February 5, 2014 Report Posted February 5, 2014 Nothing like an electric tennis racket to kill the flies and it's also good exercise. You seem to have everything covered. Roly wombatie 1 Quote
Multifasited Posted February 5, 2014 Author Report Posted February 5, 2014 Rory,The nicest part about this is it,s automatic ,does't cost a thing & doesn't change the norm ,I was just thinking as a 12yr.old boy ,I was playing w/ my pet parakeet in the kitchen ,my Mom had put up a fly strip ,The parakeet flew into it ,You talk about a crisis in a heart beat ,screaming flopping bird ,bird biting as I tried to keep him from breaking his wing sticky fly paper roll all over me I remember dusting him w/J&J baby powder to kill the glue and pealing him off that fly paper all white and covered with powder and coffing and puffing powder in between bites and screams in the process ,he lost a few feathers ,and didn't want anything to do with any body for a couple weeks . Became my dad's pet when I left for the service 6 yrs later ,he died 2 yrs later .his name was pretty boy ,he could say that ! Sorry my mind drifted back 62 yrs ,don't seem possible . Carl show us a picture of this tray I can't picture it, am I thick is it the cat food that attracts them in the first place. why are they going to the tray of soap. ? Roly oh poor parrot. Quote
Multifasited Posted August 12, 2014 Author Report Posted August 12, 2014 Simplisity in design .I had to raise off the floor because my dog "pork chop" eat too much and the vet said no more . So that's why it's on the ss table,This all started out to keep the ants out of the food, thats why the moat around the pan ,the soap was the final deterant ,Dawn stopped the ants cold ,then the dead flies started to appear ,cloth pad between pan and tray keeps pan centered in the moat from floating to edge as food weight contact lessens and let pan float to edge .You may not be able to see new dead flies about ten since cleaned two days ago .We have no cat of our own just visitors the one picture stays here most of the time ,I call him Kit-Kit .
