wdkits1 Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Hi EveryoneI was asked to create a special keepsake chest for a couple in memory of their first child. The chest is made from Peruvian Walnut and measures 28" x 16" x 10". The Memorial Plaque is made from Holly and laser engraved. Although I had to learn a few new techniques in the construction of this project I can't say this was a fun project. Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Mike that's a beautiful chest and I like the nameplate idea. thanks for showing Roly Quote
Ron Johnson Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 Good day Mike That is a really beautiful memorial chest you made. Fantastic craftmanship. I can almost see the tears in the young couples eyes when you present this to them. I would find doing such a project an honor. You deserve a lot of credit. Quote
Fay Prozora Posted February 13, 2014 Report Posted February 13, 2014 It's beautiful I wish I could build some thing like for my sister who lost her son and husband inside of 8 months of each other. I bet the young coupe will love it. Take care.. Fay Quote

oldhudson Posted February 15, 2014 Report Posted February 15, 2014 That is a really nice looking project. Well done! Where do you find Peruvian walnut? Do have a laser engraver in your shop? What new skills did you work on? It looks like the corners are mitered, were they splined too? Finally that was a very interesting treatment for the bottom of the box and drawer. Very nice. Quote
wdkits1 Posted February 15, 2014 Author Report Posted February 15, 2014 Thanks everyone for the comments To Oldhudson I get the Peruvian Walnut from Wall Lumber in NC. I have a guy that does my laser work for me -does really great work. One of the new skills I had to learn was doing the full mortice lock using router bits. Another new skill was doing the recess for the plaque using a pattern bit(actually a hinge mortice bit) with a bottom bearing and template. The corners are mitered but in lieu of splines I drill a series of 5/64th holes in the miters with a dremel tool which allows glue to bond the corners effectively. I supply my clients with photos of different upholstery materials to select what they would like to use for the linings. The material is cut to size and glued in place. Quote
