Hi Everyone
I was asked to create a special keepsake chest for a couple in memory of their first child.
The chest is made from Peruvian Walnut and measures 28" x 16" x 10". The Memorial Plaque is made from Holly and laser engraved. Although I had to learn a few new techniques in the construction of this project I can't say this was a fun project.

Good day Mike

That is a really beautiful memorial chest you made. Fantastic craftmanship. I can almost see the tears in the young couples eyes when you present this to them. I would find doing such a project an honor. You deserve a lot of credit.

That is a really nice looking project. Well done!  Where do you find Peruvian walnut? Do have a laser engraver in your shop? What new skills did you work on? It looks like the corners are mitered, were they splined too? Finally that was a very interesting treatment for the bottom of the box and drawer.  Very nice.

To Oldhudson

I get the Peruvian Walnut from Wall Lumber  in NC.

I have a guy that does my laser work for me -does really great work.

One of the new skills I had to learn was doing the full mortice lock using router bits.

Another new skill was doing the recess for the plaque using a pattern bit(actually a hinge mortice bit) with a bottom bearing and template.

The corners are mitered but in lieu of splines I drill a series of 5/64th holes  in the miters with a dremel tool which allows glue to  bond the corners effectively.

I supply my clients with photos of different upholstery materials to select what they would like to use for the linings. The material is cut to size and glued in place.
