I have bought wood from Ocooch and was very happy with the products... Fay Locally I go to the Home Depot and get pine or poplar to scroll. Some times I find good prices on that wood. Fay

I have used some corner brackets, but they are not real strong but one day will try the v nails and see if they are any better. THe one I made for the John Wayne portrait I scrolled did not stay together so out it went. Grrr.... I've tried glue but it did not stay together that way either. I hear the v nails are better. Fay

Really nice. I saw some thing like that hanging in the window at the Dr office last year. They are nice.. Great job on those.. Fay

I don't let my sister's 2 dogs in the shop when I'm working in there. I don't like the idea of them breathing in all that saw dust. Too bad there are no masks for dogs. They come in when I'm not scrolling or turning so that is nice and I come out of the shop and Scooter is laying there by the door. Butter is always outside in the sun. They soo like to be around people and they are the friendliest dogs I have ever seen... Take care,, Fay

I found a pusher for a buck at a yard sale a week or two ago. What is a jointer used for? You got a great deal on it. The pusher I found works great with my scroll aw and it comes in handy for those small pieces that are hard to hold onto. Fay -
Leave it to a child to teach us some thing. I never would have thought of that myself. I usually use needle type of files myself but do use a mac mop on smaller items. Great job on the cutting tho.. Fay

I bought my lathe from Rockler. Not sure if they still have their mini lathe on sale for $199.00 or not but that's the price I got mine. Also purchased a set of 5 tools for turning but they are not the greatest but they work fine so far. I just need to get a small low speed grinder to keep my tools sharp. I just started turning a couple days ago. I started a pen last night and in a little bit will go down to work on it. I hope it turns out. I'm making a slim line pen and that is just a simple turning project. We'll see how well it will look. The heart bowl is from Steve Good. It is cut at a small angle say about 1 1/2 degree angle and then you should get a nice drop to get the bowl to look like steps. He doesn't say which blade to use on the saw but I used a #3 FD UR blade and if I had gone to a #5 or a #7 I might have gotten a deeper drop. I didn't put any glue on it either and it is staying like it is in the picture. I enjoyed cutting it. Take care and have a great day Fay

The heart bowl is a Steve Good project and the candle holder is a piece I turned and then combined it with scrolling. The bowl on top of it and the base was cut on the scroll saw. I was practicing making the beads and balls on the lathe and did not like the way it turned out and was going to toss it, but then decided to make some thing else out of it and here are the results of that. Thanks for looking Fay

Thank you every one. Shoot that bowl was cut at a steep angle too so it was a little hard to work with on the saw. THere's a little piece of that wood left but I may try to turn it on the lathe later tonight after it gets here. I should be able to cut some pen banks out of what is left and that wood would make pretty pens or handles for other things. Thanks again,, Fay

I made this bowl and it took me a couple of days to finish it. It is an improvement from the last bowl I did and not so much glue problems. There were a few . I found a piece of wood in a thrift store so I cut the bowl out on the scroll saw. It is thicker than what the pattern called for but it turned out fine other wise. I like the way it flared out at the top. I believe the wood is a curly maple and it was a hard wood to cut. I used a wood turner's finish on the bowl and I like the shine on it...Enjoy,, Fay

Thank you every one. We went to the Goodwill today and I found a nice piece of curly maple and it was hard to cut, but I have another bowl in the bowl press now so tomorrow I will sand it and get the bottom glued on and it should turn out ot be a nice bowl. It has a nice wood grain in the wood too. I also found a nice triangular shaped piece of pine so that may turn into a bowl too. I'm not sure as yet what to make out of it. This bowl did turn out great after working ore with it and now I'm pleased with it. ( talking about the one I posted here.) Well had my shower so I will go to bed now so I'll say Good night ,,, Fay

The wood is pine wood that my brother gave me. This was the last little piece of it and it turned out pretty well. I took it back to the shop to try to get the rest of the glue out and it came out better. I'm pleased with it now and I can give it to my SIL. I think my angles are getting better too... Thank you every one,, Fay

No Kevin,, in my days of school girls were not allowed to take shop. Just as boys were not allowed to take Home Ec. They don't seem to teach that any more now a days. Funny how things change over the years... Fay

I had problems with the glue spill out but once I think they are gone and the apply some finish on it,, then I can see them big time! Any way a lot of work went into this bowl and it turned out pretty good after more sanding to get rid of the glue but not all of it came out. Oh well, I wish they would come out with some sort of a desolver stuff just for glue spill outs and not damage the project... Enjoy Fay

Thank you every one. Yes I will try to turn a bowl once I get used to the lathe and will be fun just to play for a spell. I might be able to turn a nice urn for Mom. She had told me some time ago that I should make some thing for her ashes. I don't know if I will do that as yet... Fay

This bowl is from Carole Rothmans' book on wooden bowls. It is not perfect but I did enjoy making it. I'm going to give it to my sister in law and I'm in hoes that she will like it. THe basket that I made for her got broken so I made this bowl. If my lathe comes on Tuesday I might be able to turn a nice bowl for her. Any way, my angles are getting better and I used the pine wood that my brother gave me and finishes it with butcher block oil and butcher block bees wax stuff so you can put food in this bowl. Enjoy, Fay

The first two pictures are of a box I found in a thrift store in Long Beach and the drawer keeps falling out of it when ever it is moved or picked up. I thought maybe I could cut this box out and give it to my youngest brother. He brought me some wood last Saturday. The thrift store box looks like it had been cut on a band saw but I cut mine out on the scroll saw. Also the drawer in the thrift store box had been flocked. I did put a lining in mine but this is a temporary lining until I get some thing better to make a lining or flocking stuff. The drawer stays in my box. I think little brother will like it. I made a knob that looks like a fin since the drawer itself looks like a fish and this is a perfect box for a man. He likes to fish and so do I... Enjoy... Fay

Thanks again every one. It was a lot of fun. I used a #1 Fd UR blade on the inlay and then cut the top and the bottom with the same blade. I used a # 5 on the inner and outer walls of the box. THe box itself is an easy one to make, now that I can do the inlay , it will be easier to do after trying it the first time. I know you have to be very careful on the turns and tight areas. Have a great evening Fay

Thanks every one. On payday I will order some more wood from the Ocooch hard wood co. some dark wood and some light wood so I can try other inlay projects. One of these days I want to try laminating wood too for bowls and the like. This is a really cute little box. Thanks again,, Fay

This is a Steve Good project and it is the very first time trying the inlay. I love it and had a great time making this box. Steve has a video on how this box is made but I had to guess at the angle to cut for the dolphin as my computer has no sound. I think I did a pretty good job on it. I'm out of finish but will get some put on it when I can get some. This is made of scrap poplar and scrap plywood. I didn't like the way the ply looked so I put a dark oak finish on the dolphin and I'm going to leave the rest of the box as it is and just put a clear finish on it. Enjoy Fay

It can be used just as a door topper too. None of our bedrooms have room for the hanging frames but there is plenty of room on the top of the door just for the scroll work. Not to mention a picture can be place in between the scroll work so that would be nice too. There is room in our dining room for the hanging frames and I might give this a shot myself... Fay

Now that is a neat idea. I think the gingerbread will be easy to cut out on the scroll saw. I have a pattern book called Victorian Gingerbread and it has a lot of ideas but never thought of some thing like this....Fay

Mine is too heavy for the saw. It would not stay up and it would fall to the table. Bummer. I'm sure it would be a great light if it worked right.. Grrr... So it is on the shelf in my shop and not connected to any thing as yet. Fay

I set my blade as to what I am working on. For hard wood that is thick you want to use a 7 or a 9 blade or what ever the instructions call for on a project. Right now I making a very delicate fretwork shelf and using a # 1 FD UR blade in the saw for the fret work. Those are great for getting in those tight areas. My table is level but for some reason it feels like it isn't but when I check the blade and the table , every thing is right. When I change the angle of the table for cutting bowls or when ever I need to cut at an angle then I use two hands on the part that you put the screws in to fasten it down. It seems to work good for me that way. I'm still getting used to that big table. My Shop Fox has a smaller table so it was a little hard for me to get used to but not that hard as I love the better features of the saw. Your saw may just need a little bit of adjusting. Make sure the table is hooked into the peg at the end of it . That was so hard for me to hook it there when I put mine on and then the screws in. Mine needs to be lubed now as I can hear a tiny little "ping" sound but will get that done before long. Enjoy your new saw... Just love mine.. Fay

That would be a nice piece just for a display. If children are rough with things it looks like one that can get broken easy and wood is not always easy to fix. It's beautiful.. Fay
