I would use a varied brown to grey shaded hues for the frame; keeping the shading mostly light with only random thin darker splotches(Lines-- blobs) in a few places.

 

Maybe even use a "barn wood" type of coloring.

 

I still think you have a great project.

I will have to get back to wood burning again ,It's been years since I did a lot of it ,the only disadvantage I seen is with out good skills sanding is the only option ,I have found for boo boos with paint ,I can repaint and blend ,shade very quickly and easily especially with washes and layering ,I would love to see what a pro could do .
