LarryEA Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 I need to cut a rectangle hole 1/2" deep in a 3/4" thick board. Is a router and a chisel the only option? I don't like that option. How do you made the corners clean with a chisel? Larry Quote
Ron Johnson Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 Good day Larry A router is all I have ever used when recessing an opening. I find a chip carving knife works well for cleaning out corners. Others may have a better solution. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
Bendita Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 You could use a mortise chisel but of course you would end up with a round hole in the bottom where the screw part was. Nope I think router and chisel is your best option Quote
Bendita Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 How about a fostner bit and chisel? Travis 1 Quote

LarryEA Posted February 21, 2014 Author Report Posted February 21, 2014 ?? Larry why don't you scroll it? Roly Roly, the hole does not go all the way thru, only 1/2 inch deep in 3/4 inch board. I'll probably leave corners round. Still don't like chisel option and will not spend $40 for corner chisel to do a $30 job. It is just that it would look better. I'll just minimize it as much as possible. Quote

Oh yea I missed the I/2" deep bit but I would do what Ron say use a corner cutting tool you just tap them with a hammer squares them off a treat, I use a sharp chisel because I don't have one of them. LarryEA Posted February 21, 2014 Author Report Posted February 21, 2014 Thanks to all... I am using a router...kinda obvious for that... for the corners I will use a standard every day wood chisel. I just found out how to sharpen the chisel to a razor sharp edge. See my next post "New projects, new jigs, new tools" Quote
oldhudson Posted February 22, 2014 Report Posted February 22, 2014 I was just thinking that even with a non-through hole drilling might be an option. You could use a 1/2" forstner bit, setting the drill press to 1/2" deep, and of course cleaning up the corners with the chisel. Forstner bits makes a nice flat bottom, except for the center spur which goes about 1/8" deeper. I can post a pic if it would help. Quote
LarryEA Posted February 23, 2014 Author Report Posted February 23, 2014 I have decided to leave the corners round. One less step and will still look good. Thank you all...Very much Larry Quote
