I  have recently taken an interest in trying my hand at intarsia, but would like to design my own patterns. I have searched all over trying to find tutorials, videos, classes or anything on the subject, with no luck. Does anyone know where to find any intarsia pattern making tutorials? Do designers use computer programs like gimp, or is it mostly old school tracing paper and pencil? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Found a tutorial on using inkscape to create intarsia patterns. Seems great so far. Will post a link if anyone else is interested.

Yep I'll have a look at that one please scrollbilly ,I've always wanted to have a go at it but I'm still gathering enough info before I start from all the experts on here .

They are excellent at Intarsia on here it goes without saying and I TALK A LOT!.

Roly,

You hesitate too much. I KNOW you would do a spectacular job with intarsia. Although there is shaping and a lot of sanding involved, you do not have to drill a lot of holes and make a lot of tight corners. It is all outside cuts and shaping and fitting. I would really like to see you dive in and go for it.

Dick, It's all the different depths you have to master, when to put an extra piece behind or have a thicker piece and how to achieve the different colours with the lack of coloured woods in the UK.

i will have a go at it I want to try some Disney characters for the Granddaughter room.
