thanks for the ideas everyone i guess a lot depends on how big the piece is. an email address is a good idea...providing you will have the same one years down the road... on my psalteries i glue a small label inside (visible from the sound hole) that just has my name and zip code...if someone get their hands on one somewhere else in the country and wanted to find me, i think with just that info they could do it. i think the woodburning would be a good idea...and i do have a small woodburner. at least that would be a 'permanent' mark where a label could be removed or fall off. now i need to practice a "small" siggy or 'mark'

i use the waco danish oil...but it's usually dry to the touch within an hour or two...a lot depends on the temp and humidity. i don't thin it at all.

definitely in the house! in my office w/ my computer! heaven on earth!!! it doesn't make near the mess as most people think it does...i keep a shop vac handy to clean up after each use.

i've got good intentions...but with the snow storm on the way...we'll see i was thinking about maybe another "hand saw". our church is having a sportsman's banquet at the end of the month and i want to donate something for one of the door prizes.

for all fretwork i dip in natural danish oil and let dry...depending on the wood, i may dip a second time. i've also used danish oil for rubbing on natural frames. for a shiny finish on frames, spray with shellac and let dry for 15 minutes, then rub w/ steel wool, then apply a paste wax and buff.

just wondering how you "mark" your work before you give it away or sell it....or DO you? i definitely wouldn't want to put anything out for sale that didn't have some identification on it.... but even a small 'return address' label on the back wouldn't fit on some of the fretwork pieces. i printed up a few labels that just said "Lori's wood crafts" to put on the back of a couple things i gave away. any ideas?

if you don't like "lucky people" stories, then you don't want to read this..... i was given an old scroll saw a year ago...it only used the 'pin-end' blades. i got a conversion kit and my hubby watched me struggle to use it,... saw the craftsman was on sale for about $100 and bought me a new one! i've been scrolling for 1 year tomorrow! my scroll saw is in my office in the house. i have my computer and scroll saw in the same room....i think heaven will probably be like this... anywho...now i just need more TIME! i've got an abundant supply of wood at work. i work in a commercial picture frame shop. all my psalteries and wood projects are made from stuff that was getting thrown out at work. today i watched a co-worker load up his pickup truck with scraps to take home and BURN in his woodstove! walnut, ash, oak, maple, bubinga, wenge, mahogany, cherry ... i've got so much wood home now my hubby would throw a fit if i brought home any more. i can use the planer at work to get the wood to any thickness i want it. when i'm done scrolling my projects i take them to work and can use the belt sanders and orbital sanders to sand them. ...it really doesn't get any better than this! i can get up from my computer here...turn around and i'm standing at my scroll saw. i keep a small shop vac under the desk to clean up around it when i'm done...it doesn't really make too much dust on things...just the walnut and padauk are pretty dusty. ...like i said....i'm a very lucky lady! ...just need more time....

@ linda that gun is cool! where did you get the pattern for that? what is the overall length? @ned you really jumped in with both feet for a 1st project! good job!

travis i don't see how you find ANY time to scroll! trying to keep up a website is very time consuming and a message board also???? sheesh! i know how much time can go into a message board! with a job and family...best wishes! you're doing a great job here!

alright jowshu!!!! you had a good mentor! i'm printing that out and posting it where i can see it each day! i know of two restaurants in my area that put up 'artwork' done by local artists...i'm sure there are others ....some private hotels do also! we just stayed at one last week where down the hallway on the ground floor were many 'crafty' items and pics w/price tags hanging off of them. you can ask pretty much what you wish...if it sells, it sells, if it doesn't, but you have a business card w/ your info on it attached...at least your work will be seen around your local area, and when someone needs that "special gift" you just may be contacted! just some ideas.... 8-) i wish i had more scroll time! i work a 40+ hour week and when i get home i have good intentions....but no energy or ambition left to do much more than sit in front of the computer and look at things i 'wish i had the time' to make

thanks all i probably won't do much with intarsia because i really don't have the interest in cutting thick materials or 'shaping' either 1/2" thick is the thickest i've cut anything and i really didn't like working with the wood that thick...i prefer to use stuff between 1/8 and 3/8". i was thinking of making another teddybear or 2 for valentines day... @ linda that indian is awesome!

this was my first attempt at ...i'm not sure what you'd call it...segmentation? intarsia? i used scraps i had that were only about 1/8" thick...padauk, walnut and oak...just cut and glued together... and here's my hubby's christmas present...i figured i'd better make him something as he'd seen me make presents for many people throughout the past year. padauk about 3/8" thick...just rubbed on natural danish oil.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! as our pastor said last sunday..."a goal not written down, is NOT a goal" i am resolving to do more scrolling this year ...and less time on the computer! many times last year i'd have an hour to spend at the saw, but would make the mistake of sitting down in front of the computer and looking up scrolling sites and free patterns etc....and the next thing i'd know, my hour was up and i did nothing on the saw! this year i'd like to complete at least 2 or 3 projects a month, to either give as gifts or hang on the wall in a local restaurant that puts consignment work up. i find gifts are the easiest and quickest, cause if i have someone in mind for my project, i will keep at it until it is done!

That's Really Sweet looking. You build the Whole Thing? or just scroll out the stuff? i've made about 25 bowed psalteries from scratch...but only a handful since i've had the scroll saw to do the sound holes. just a part-time hobby...as is scrolling

just finished cutting out 2 bows for psalteries. here's a pic of my latest psaltery...i scrolled the sound hole.
