  5. Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing this with us. As for the blades bending you might wish to pull out the lower holder screws and make sure that the part that the blade contacts is flat if they are not it will bend the blade. DW

  10. Sam I use a lot of tung oil to do my finishes. The can of "Tung Oil" that you purchased at Home Depot bears little resemblance to the pure tung oil that is available. The product in the can that you purchased all ready has been thinned and has dryers added. What I use is the pure tung oil which I get from my local WoodCraft store. I make a mixture of 70 / 30 Tung Oil to Mineral Spirits. Tung OIl is one of the few "drying oils" What it does is penetrate the pores of the wood and get below the surface then when the air hits it the oil starts to congeal. Most finishes such as Lacquer, Shellac, Polyurethane sit on the top layer of the woods surface where it becomes cured. The Tung Oil because it sits below the surface helps prevent the top coat finish from soaking into the wood. Most finishes are fine as a top coat on top of Tung Oil. Please be aware that the rags that you apply the oil with and the rags that you wipe off the excess with should never be left crumpled in a ball as they can spontaneously combust and burn your shop down. Hope this helped a bit Sam. Feel free to ask questions if you have more. DW

  13. One of the issues on the DW788 both type 1 and type 2 is that the motor is totally enclosed. These motors use carbon brushes that wear. Depending upon the supplier of the brushes will determine how fast they wear. When they wear they release fine particles of carbon which build up on the rotor of he motor and can short it out. I had this issue very much like yours a few years back and I had the motor replaced and this fixed the issue. Luckily Dewalt has a Guaranteed Repair Price where the repair price will not go over something like $250 or something close to that. I used this program and had them do a through overhaul when they replaced the motor. You might wish to go to http://www.dewalt.com/Find-Service-Center-Results.aspx and see if there is a repair center near you. DW
  14. Purple Heart is a very dense wood and is and will burn easily if your blade is the least bit dull and you do not take the precautions that Dan mentioned. Purple Heart will darken over time when exposed to light and for your design consideration you have to take that into consideration. If you are going to make a bowl perhaps using the purple heart as an accent color with something like say hard maple, another hard dense wood but one light in color. I do not know what tools you have or the size of the piece of wood you have however I have seen things like a 2x4 turned into a ukulele, so you are only limited by your imagination and skills. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with. DW

  17. Nicely done Kevin. Just do 2 min. of sorting a day and you will be done before you know it DW
  18. When I stack cut more than 2 pieces I use hot glue to hold them together. I used to use wrap around tape. Scotch tape is not a good tape for that. The Blue Painters tape holds well and comes off without destroying the wood. It does not leave tape glue residue like scotch tape or masking tape does. Most clear packing tape will leave tape glue so if you want to tape the layers together I suggest the blue painters tape. DW
