  1. I would say that when it comes to scrolling that my passion is creating intarsia. I love working with the different woods, drawing the patterns and enjoy the challenge of making something that is totally unique.
  2. Congratulations Dale Great WIP and puzzle. Send me a PM with your address and your Intarsia Rose Box will be on the way. Thanks to everyone for entering the contest and to Travis for putting it all together.
  3. Beautiful Job Sue-- looks like it was fun to do.
  4. Hi everyone Just got the results from the NC Woodworkers 2010 Calender contest and it appears that my rendition of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello won the spot for artistic scroll saw work. Very excited to say the least as there was a lot of excellent talent displayed.
  5. Well, between the closet project, finishing 10 dining room chairs, refinishing 2 end tables, getting a few intarsia kits ready to ship and a few things on the honey-do list I finally managed to get in some scrolling time. This is a sign that I did for a customer for her beach house. It was made from Mahogany with Cyprus on walnut letters. The letters are cut at a 5 degree angle to allow the walnut to appear as a shadow. The frame is one piece, cut on the scroll saw using the cut and drop method which allows the area where the letters are to be recessed. After gluing the drop down section in place I ran it through the planer to flush up the back of the frame. Finished with 4 coats of spray-on Spar Varnish. Fun little project. Cyprus on Walnut letters cut at 5 degrees gives depth and shadows. Back of sign shows no cut lines.
  6. Great job on this project Clayton. Nice choice of woods and beautiful cutting and finishing.
  7. The manager at the Woodcraft store here in Richmond has offered the classroom space at their new location for use as a meeting place for the newly formed River City Scrollers. Anyone interested in joining this group can contact me by PM or e-mail at [email protected] or 804-897-1180 for more information.
  8. Hi all Not much on the scrollsaw right now but am gearing up to start a commission to build new shelving and cabinets for a clients walk-in closets.I ordered 575 bf of Brazilian cherry from Wall Lumber and have made room in the shop to store it. This project should keep me busy for about 5 weeks. The same client then wants me to do an intarsia of a 1968 Porsche 911.We're having fun now !!!

  13. Hi everyone We just got back from the Harrisonburg picnic and have to say we had a great time. We got to see some of the works of other talented scrollers from Va. and elsewhere. Great folks and overall a great time for good fellowship and story swapping. I was honored to come home with the first place ribbon and the best of show ribbon for my Intarsia of Monticello. Thanks again to the members of the Shenandoah Valley Scrollers for putting on this event. Looking forward to attending next year.
  14. Thanks Travis We had a good day. My best seller was the wooden pens and the custom cutting boards plus a commission to do a 1968 Porsche 911 intarsia piece. That should be fun.
  15. Saturday was our first art show of the year where the LOML works at John Tyler Community Collage here in Midlothian,Va. It is an annual event that features all types of artists and is a pretty big thing in this area. Weather was perfect, the crowd was big and was an over-all good day. Sales could have been better but overall we did decent considering the bum economy. We sold a few wooden cutting boards,a bunch of pens,a table, a jewelry box and hopefully a nice commissioned intarsia piece or two.Time will tell. Also had a lot of interest in the furniture repair and refinishing part of my business. Here is a picture of my booth
  16. I can't say it is my favorite but my most challenging project was my Intarsia of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. It began with a postcard sized picture which I hand drew to 20" x 30",added the horse and buggy for historical value then put in the autumn background to add color.Over 800 pieces from 17 woods done in 150 hours over 2 months.
  17. I am presently working on a set of Intarsia inlayed coasters. Mike

I am a one man operation [along with LOML of course] and I specialize in Intarsia. I create and sell intarsia project kits, do custom and commissioned pieces along with fine furniture and furniture repair. I currently have 2 articles running [one in scrollsaw woodworking and crafts and one in boomerlife magazine].www.boomerlifemagazine.com.page 31. I will post some pics of my work soon and hope to hear from some of you. Also I will soon be doing an Intarsia tutorial on the NC woodworkers site , the subject being a custom piece of a 1953 Ford pickup for a customer in Texas. Mike
