  1. Rja That absolutely amazes me, to pull the block away and see the ornament there. The funny part is I can't really wrap my mind around how that works out like that. I love it! The back surgery I'm having is due to an automobile accident. I manage several stores and was on my way to one when I got Tboned and ruptured some disks in my back. Now I'm thinking I don't want to go back to work I've been home so long and really enjoying my scroll saw, though i go out and work for about 10 mintues at a time, can't wait til I can sit there all I want to.
  2. Thank you both for your nice comments. I did find that the wood certainly makes a difference, the last one was a combination of pine and something like oak, but thats not right, I can't remember for sure. Too many meds right now lol. But it was definitely more difficult to cut through. I'm going to make my next one out of solid pine as I think the softer wood will make it much easier and get the hang of it. Hubby and I are working hard and turning one side of our garage (2 car garage) into a woodworking shop. He has done a lot of it and is very good at it. So to our advantage the Blockbuster here in town is going out of business so we purchased their huge L shaped counter that held their cash registers etc. We are going to put that in the garage and it will make a wonderful, huge work area for all of our projects...........so I'm really excited about that.
  3. Ithink they are outstanding!
  4. I'm not sure that bragging rights is where this posting belongs, however, I have come a long way since my last post. I had started out using spiral blades only and that worked out great for me, if nothing else to get me comfortable with the machine, cutting, speeds etc. Now I can alternate between spiral blades and straight blades depending on what I'm working on. These three ornaments are nothing to brag about other than I was able to glue boards together, then cut into a square block and come up with something that was close to the pattern of a 3D Christmas Tree ornament. Once by back surgery is over, I'm going to hit this hard and heavy til they are perfect, I adore these things. I did manage to get a set of ABC's cut out, sanded down and painted for my 2 yr old grandbaby, so that is pretty cool also.
  5. Okay, got the spiral blades and I love them! I can see where the flat/regular blades will be handy as well but for starting out the sprials have been a life saver as I tend to be quite critial of myself. I'm trying to send a pic from my phone to my computer so I can post it, really nothing exciting but I did manage to get a cat, a fish and a capital letter A cut out and am relative pleased with them. So now I'm flooding my own brain with what I need to accomplish before Christmas. A set of alphabet letters for my grandson and a set for my nephew's little girl. And I do keep picking up the magazines and reading those, free patterns to boot LOL, and they really get me cranked up about learning more. I feel as giddy as a child in a candy store. And I'll try that looking at an angle instead of straight on, I have realized that I was trying to go to slow which was causing me a problem so I'm moving a bit faster andthat is really helping. But for now I've exceeded my alloted sitting time so I'm off to bed and relax and read the magazine I picked up today.
  6. Wow, Okay so I'm not far from Springefield really, I'm in Warrensburg so that is nice to know there is someone close. I finally purchased my scrollsaw this weekend, it's a Hitachi CW40 and it came with a stand, since the wreck the stand makes it very nice. So now I'm just diddling around trying to learn how to stay on the lines etc and get this down pat. I read a lot of what people had to say and this saw will use both flat blades and the others (sorry forgot my terminology for a moment). It's a very quiet machine which is nice. I'm heading back out to the shop, hubby is installing a spiral blade for me so that hecan show me how to do it.
  7. Thanks so much, that is very helpful. Hubby just went and got some sprial blades wants to see if that helps me at all. This is nice, fun to think about the things I will be able to do once I learn this and nice to have a challenge.
  8. Okay I tried searching some of the posts on here for answers to my questions........but there are so many LOL. So I'm really new to this just got my scroll saw last night after looking looking and looking some more. I did pretty good with the practice cuts from the Scroll Saw Workbook I got, but have a few questions. Like what speed should I set the blade at, and how do I figure out if I have the proper tension set on my blade. I did notice that it appeared sometimes that my blade was a little bent when I completed a cut though it did go back in place, maybe i was applying to much pressure. I was hesitant to turn too sharp etc when i was trying to make sharp turns but then realized if I view it as similar to my sewing machine it worked much better for me. So any tips on the above would be appreciated. Thanks.
  9. I will pass your thanks along to the boys, and I appreciate it. Also thanks for the advice on the scroll saw things to look for. It seems I'm going to be home a bit until I recover some of the auto accident I was in, so it will give me plenty of time to research.
  10. Hello, just found this web site this evening and I'm so very happy. I have not yet started scroll saw work but am in the planning stages of it. I have some woodworking background and this is something I have always wanted to do. So right now I'm researching to find out what type of scroll saw I should get and trying to locate patterns that look like they would be easy to start with. I have many hobbies and some of those include needle work which makes me think that this will be a good hobby for me once I learn it. I am married, we have three boys all in the Army, one headed back to Iraq for a second tour. one on the Army Culinary Competition team (yes he is much more than a cook lol) and one son just medically retired, an 8 year old daughter at home and a 1 yr old grandson. It's always quiet at our house.....NOT LOL.
