  1. Great Job.... You have inspired me to have a go at converting a photo.... Well I will try at least lol
  2. Fantastic!! Now that I have started to scroll I really do admire and enjoy looking at such amazing cuts such as these :-) I am not up to that standard yet! But with each day I am a step closer than I was the day before :-)
  3. Welcome Tony I am new to the forum and scrolling too.... I have only been doing both for 2 weeks but having a blast and the guys and girls on here are full of encouragement advice and support :-)
  4. I would love to see them.... I am not doing my own patterns as yet but am having a blast with patterns I find in the pattern section here and on the net... I have borrowed bits out of various patterns and put them all together to make a single project tho.... I am also finidng after 2 weeks I am getting braver at the projects I am doing.... I have done word art mainly but have just finished my first portrait and am now addicted to portraits (odd as portraits were something I was least interested in doing when I thought about getting a saw but now love them) Hope to see your patterns in progress soon DOC :-)
  5. What a neat lil charachter you have created... You have really brought him to life!
  6. They all look fantastic... Seeing everyone elses work really is what inspires me
  7. Just another quick project I cut the other day and have painted it up tonight....
  8. Thanks again wolfmoon.... And as long as I have the saw turned on it is guaranteed that I will have fun
  9. Gday Mate Welcome along... I am a complete novice to scrolling and have only owned a scroll saw as of last week... Over the last few months I would come and read the forum often but only joined up and started posting on here last week also... I used to lurk for hours reading and learning on here... This forum seems to have some great members who go above and beyond to help each other out and to share ideas etc... I am sure you will find this a great place also.. Havinago
  10. Thanks for the input guys Old Dust the rules don't really tell me anything... I am also new to where I live as I moved interstate and don't even know a single soul in the place let alone somone who scroll saws or enters the show :( WolfmoonCT the very first material I cut was 3mm MDF and it is what I used to make the rabit and micky mouse that I posted the other day... Unfortunatly due to living in the sticks (rural area) I am very limited in the materials I have available to me... A certain hardware store does stock some ply but more construction ply than Baltic Birch Ply.... Infact the nearest place I can get Baltic Birch from is over 6 hours away and would be a 12 hour round trip :( I was thinking of entering a portrait in the show and was thinking of using the 3mm MDF as I don't really know what else I could use that I have access too, If anyone has any suggestions they would be more than welcome.. Due to the thought of using 3mm MDF I was thinking that I would probably have to paint it as I dont think clear coat over MDF is going to work out well for presentation??
  11. Sorry for so many posts... I mainly use the search forum feature to find the answers to my questions but this one does not seem to be covered... In a few months there is an anual show day and public show day holiday.... The show has sections for horses, dogs, pottery, photography, and much more and one of the sections is wood work and a sub section for scroll saw work... I have noticed they have an amature section and thought I would like to enter something in this section... (not that I feel I am at a level that I would win but just for the fuzzy feeling of having entered) I can not really find any rules for the competition other than not to print your name or sign the work and that an entry ticket must be attatched and that the item must have been crafted within the last 12 months and is an original work and the type of timber used listed on the entry ticket... I know that each show will have different rules but am after a general guide.... 1) is MDF generally ok to be used as a material for woodworking scroll saw competitions? 2) is it generally ok to have the item painted? ie say I made something from 3mm ply could I then paint the whole item black or white? or do competitions usualy want the item in clear varnish/stains? I am sorry if these questions seem dopey but I am quite keen to have a go at this and see something I have made on exhibit at the show.... I am aware that most shows have different criteria etc but know from photography that there is generally a universal standard to what is acceptable and what is not... Thanks in advance
  12. Hi all As I am new to scroll sawing and also new to SSV I don't really have any sawing tips to share but have been enjoying everyone elses tips! I can however give a tip on purchasing and finding books on scroll sawing and how to track down hard to find books and also how to get them for the best possible price! I was after a copy of "Scroll Saw Fretwork Techniques and Projects" and amazon was wanting $50 for a new copy.... Not in my price range after buying a saw and blades this week already! So I went to www.bookfinder.com I use bookfinder.com all the time to find novels that I can not find in bookstores or book exchanges.... This website allows you to put in the information of the book you are after and it will search the internet for all book sellers and stores and return the results.... Once you have conducted a search you can select if you are wanting new or used... You will then be given a list of all the sellers that have the book and what the price is including any shipping costs.... This allows you to find the best possible price for the book you are after and you also get told the condition the book is in if it is a used copy... I got the book I was after for $3.95 usa (amazon wanted $50) Hope some may find this helpfull and I should point our that I am not affiliated with bookfinder in any shape or form and provide this for the sole purpose of helping pay back the community of SSV for the information I have learnt... 15. Hi all I am trying to contact mikes workshop in reagard to some questions about ordering blades but when ever I select "email me" on his site I get an error message... I can not seem to locate the email address on the page either.... If someone has it could they please PM it to me? Probably best not to post it on the forum as spam bots could pick it up and spam him.... Cheers Havinago
  16. About to order some blades for myself and father inlaw from mike myself..... As soon as I locate a darn post of a reccomended 1st blade order for a noob like myself... I know I read it on here the other day

  18. They both look fantastic... The dog one definatly caused a smile on my face
  19. I can honestly say I am really happy with this saw at this price for my current skill level (read no skil yet) I did not even know it came with the built in rotary flex shaft and bits until I removed it from the box... The box just said "with accessories" so I was thinking accessories such as an alan key and a few blades... So a really pleasant surprise indeed. Will try to get some pics of the machine to post on here later... As I would honestly reccomend this saw to any one like myself who is new to scroll saws and does not want to have a big entry cost... I have spent a while trying to figure out any set backs on the saw that would require me to upgrade to a higher end machine but can not find any at this stage... Seems Ryobi really thought this model through!
  20. Thank you both for your kind and encouraging words... Really appreciated. I certainly think that tracing around cups and shapes around the house and then cutting them out really helped me get a better understanding of how to rotate and move the wood to get the desired curves.. The main thing is that I enjoyed just tinkering around with the saw... Wish I had of gotten into this sooner!
  21. Hi all Have done my introduction post on the intro section of the forum but thought I would post here too... I got my very first scroll saw yesterday and spent all of yesterday playing with the various screws knobs and learning to change blades etc (did not even turn the saw on yesterday) Today I decided I would turn the saw on for the first time as I have not really ever used a scroll saw before but had a 5 min go of the father in laws one a few months back... Well I started off tracing around a cup, my iphone, and other small items and had a go at cutting out various shapes lines and curves etc... I then found a rabbit decoration in the house from easter so traced around that and also found a micky mouse stencil in my partners scrap book folder so traced that too and had a go at cutting them out... So having all of about 2 hours experience with a scroll saw here is my first 2 attempts.... I do not own the patters nor do I intend to sell items like this as I am aware of copyright
  22. Gday All Well I have lurked this forum and other forums for a long time despite not owning a scroll and having all of a 5 min go of the father in laws scroll saw (he makes kids furniture and pull wagons etc from recycled timber) I finally went out and got a scroll saw yesterday and settled on a Ryobi 16 inch as it accepts both plain and pin blades and also came with a built in flex shaft rotary tool and a big box of rotary tool bits... sanding cutting engraving etc... I also like that the blade can be side mounted for side cutting if the work piece is over 16inch in depth... I know it is not a high end saw but for the price of $220AU and the features it has I thought that this is a great saw for me to learn the skills required and most of all as my forum name suggests to be HAVIN A GO! Got hold of a sheet of MDF for $2 so have been practicing cutting shapes and circles etc. I have also just quit smoking and today is my 2nd day of no smoking so have found this a welcome distraction... Look forward to getting to know everyone and learning from you all Havinago
