LarryEA, There are bunches of them. The main ones are where the pivot arm from the motor concentric connects to the parallel linkage. There are bearings in every moving part, small needle bearings held in by a cage. A sleeve or bushing goes into them and the bolt goes through that. The bearing that connects the motor concentric to the pivot arm is a sealed bearing and doesn’t need to be greased. Also when taking it apart keep in mind that nut on the shaft is LEFT hand thread. I watched a series of videos on YouTube about maintaining a DW788 and all the information is true for the Delta as well. I also have the Delta 40-694. Like Don R said, the bearings were dry when I received it and it caused lots of noise and vibration. I took it apart and greased all the bearings with synthetic grease and it purrs now. It is a close brother to the DW788. It has many interchangeable parts. The only differences I can see is the arm lift hold and the case is slightly a different shape.

Thanks Scrappie. I didn’t really try either. I made a Firefighter plaque and showed it to a co-worker and they ordered 2. Then someone else overheard us talking and they ordered 4 and the word spread like wildfire. Next thing I knew I had the next 2 weeks worth of scrolling time booked. -

I’m glad he is ok. I have been a Paramedic for 18 years and have been on those type of calls. Some had happy endings like yours and others did not. I suggest that anyone with children that want to play sports get a more in depth physical than the regular sports physicals. They should include an EKG, blood work and x-rays. There are many congenital defects that can escape a routine physical assessment. Again, I’m glad he is ok. Best wishes, Bob. -
I’ve been scrolling for about a month now and with the sales of some of the work I’ve done, I’ve been able to cover the cost of my initial investment i.e. new saw, blades, stand, foot switch, wood etc. I am not taking into consideration my time. I didn’t start doing this to make money. I do woodworking as a hobby and a stress reliever, not as a business. I call it a success if I can make enough money to finance the hobby and so far I’ve done that. I think if I tried to make money at it, it would lose my enjoyment. I like when I can put on some good music, get comfortable and start scrolling without having the pressure of production on my mind. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the compliments. DW, I will definitely look into the baking times for the polymer. When I do that I might use 1/2 inch or 3/8 stock. The only reason I used 3/4 this time is from pure laziness and not wanting to plane it down. I rarely have thin stock on hand mostly all 3/4 4/4 stock. My bandsaw isn’t terribly accurate and only has a 6†depth of cut so resawing is limited to say the least. Amazingkevin, I’ve seen some of your work. You are just being modest. You do excellent work.

This is a plaque I made from one of the patterns I bought from Sheila Landry Designs. So far I’ve been commissioned to make 3. It was a big job for a beginner but I’m getting the hang of it. Now I just have to mount it on a base (customer wanted it free standing) and put a finish on it. It’s made of cherry and measures 4†wide x 16†long 3/4†thick. I think in the future I might try putting in a polymer clay inlay that I saw on Steve Good’s website.

Blades will stretch. I will usually put in a new blade tension it, run the saw for a little while then re-tension the blade. Also check to see if your blade clamps are holding sufficiently.

I’ve seen some of her work on the internet as well as in books. It’s good to hear that she too provides a good product at a fair price and is easy to deal with. Reading this recommendation, I won’t hesitate to order from her if I need to. In fact, I have already done one of her projects. It was a Key holder that was in one of the latest scroll saw magazines. I posted it in the user gallery.

Last night, I was searching for some projects to do and found some at Sheila Landry Designs. I put a couple items in my cart and checked out. It was pretty late, after midnight and I didn’t expect a reply until the next day. Approximately 5 minutes later I received an email containing my patterns. I was shocked. I sent back a reply thanking them for their very fast turn around and got a reply very quickly as well. The patterns come with a material list and full instructions for cutting, assembly and finishing. I am very pleased with the great quality, artistry and customer service that was provided and I wanted to pass along my experience to you all.

Thank you for the welcome, Ike. I am looking forward to learning from the experience of the people here. I posted a few pictures in the gallery of my recent beginning projects. I have a Delta 40-694 school saw. It is very similar to the DeWalt 788.

I too have heard nothing but good things about the DeWalt. I have a 13†Ryobi for now until I can afford the DeWalt. It’s decent, nothing special.

In addition to scrolling I turn pens on the lathe. I see inlaid blanks at Woodcraft that have been cut with a laser. I am wondering if anyone has done this with a scroll saw.?

I have the Delta 40-694. It is very similar to the DeWalt 788 and it has a few options that the DeWalt doesn’t have. It has a pin to hold the arm up and a small blade holder. Everything else is pretty much identical. It was 399.00 on Amazon. I ordered the saw a foot switch and a stand and it was still cheaper than the DeWalt saw. Yellow paint must be expensive lol

I had the same problem with my Delta 40-694. (Very similar to the DeWalt 788) I took it apart and adjusted the counterbalance closer to the pivot drive arm. I also put 2 nylon washers on either side of the shaft in the pivot arm assembly. I tightened all bolts and lubed them with lithium grease. The saw runs much quieter and the vibration is almost gone. Has some vibration at high speed but it’s what you would expect.
