  1. I thought I'd share my experience lately... I've been using PayPal for credit cards and it worked great for me... until I got a new cellphone last month (Google Pixel). For some reason it didn't like my new phone and I was having all sorts of issues and I'd end up having to key in the credit card number for transactions which is not only a pain in the neck, but it also incurs an additional fee. I emailed them and they sent me a new swiper, but I was still having issues. I decided to sign up for Square and I received my swiper yesterday just in time for my event today and when my PayPal started giving me problems I switched to Square and it worked flawlessly for me the rest of the day. I preferred using PayPal because I just let my balance grow and periodically would transfer money to my bank account. Square sends the money to my bank account automatically a day or two after the transactions. No big deal in the grand scheme of things and now I know that Square works with my phone and I won't have any more hassles.
  2. Ha! It's amazing how quickly my foot comes off that switch when a blade breaks.
  3. Good luck Casey. If you end up moving back into the garage, I have a similar situation, very hot during the summer so I built a "room" and I used a portable AC unit. It's not perfect, but it does make it tolerable for cutting. You could also heat the space with a small space heater during the winter. Here's what I shared a couple of months ago. http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/21427-new-cutting-room/
  4. Hey Jim, Welcome. Feel free to ask as many questions as necessary. We've all been there and it's the easiest way to learn. Many very helpful and knowledgeable folks here. I'm just here mostly for decoration. ;-) As to your switch, I'm not really sure about the two different types. All I can do is let you know this is the one I use for my Dewalt saw and I also have my ShopVac/Dust Deputy hooked up to it so that I control everything with one foot and it has worked flawlessly every day for 18 months. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LJNJOE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  5. I only use poplar because I love the variations in the colors and it cuts so well. The downside is that it will snap easily in narrow areas. I've gotten better at not manhandling the pieces, but I still do occasionally break a puzzle piece but I'm usually able to repair it (glue it) with nobody being the wiser. As to the cost, yes it's a bit pricey, $5 a foot at Home Depot. But a 5' piece gets me 15 puzzles, so only $1.67 per puzzle. Nice work Dan. Puzzles are the most amazing things on the planet. :-)
  6. Lee, Since this is your first event, I'll offer the following suggestions as I have learned during my first season doing events. 1) Have a chair so you can sit when you have a chance, it makes for a long day to be standing the entire time. 2) Have bags for buyers to put their purchases in 3) Have a pen and paper to take orders, notes, etc. 4) Take a cooler with beverages and snacks. Again, it's a long day. I assume it's an indoor event? If it's outdoors, be sure to have a way to weigh down your tent so it doesn't blow away in a gust of wind. Any other words of wisdom to share from the collective group?
  7. I just have one word... WOW! Very, very nice. The work, the display... everything. Impressive. Please report back after the event to let us know how it went.
  8. Great work Scott and very nice displays. Congrats. I always smile when I see things I make too... the dinosaur puzzles. What types of wood do you make them from? I do them as kids puzzles using pine and coloring them using watered down food coloring. They are very popular at every event I do.
  9. I'm fully aware of that Len. I was simply letting him know what I use to cut 3/4 inch wood puzzles so he could give it a try since I cut 30-35 of them a week and he said the #5 blades were too loose.
  10. I use #3 blades when cutting 3/4" poplar. Just fine enough to keep the puzzle pieces from being too loose.
  11. I share this whenever someone talks about using tape... A very inexpensive alternative and works well. If you do a lot of cutting and realize you're spending a lot on painters tape. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002AS9NC6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  12. Hi Len, It's another Harvey Byler pattern. You can get it from Wooden Teddy Bear. This link should take you to the page it's on. If not, it's under PATTERNS, PUZZLES, TRANSPORTATION http://www.woodenteddybearonline.com/x/home.php?cat=1023
  13. When I placed my most recent order for some patterns I needed, I tossed in a car pattern. I decided to give it a try today... Took me about double the time it takes me to do an animal and the letters are smaller than with the animals and it took extra effort to keep the wood steady and make the tiny, tight turns... was hurting my fingers. I don't want to shorten my cutting career.
  14. Hey, those dogs look familiar!!! Nicely done Ike. One thing I like to be sure to mention and show potential customers about the dog puzzles is that they stand upright on their own. Some folks don't realize it until you actually show them, and then I mention "They're meant to stand on a table or in a bookcase... etc, etc." Good luck with them. Some days they won't get much interest, but other days you'll have a bunch of dog lovers come by. I have an event tomorrow. Beautiful weather and hope to meet some more pleasant folks.
  15. Who's book? Harvey Byler patterns are available at Wooden Teddy Bear. Here's a link to the various groups of them. http://www.woodenteddybearonline.com/x/home.php?cat=100
  16. Expect a box in your mail soon... shake it up to mix them a bit more. LOL
  17. After a stressful and busy few days with my saw breaking down and needing to get a new one here pronto before I fly out of town for the week on business, I was able to get everything done that I needed for an upcoming event next Saturday. Including 8 new horse puzzles, along with the 3 I had made last week as a test. Let me know how you like them. Iggy
  18. My new DW788 arrived today at noon. Thank you Amazon and FedEx. It is great, of course. I just finished 3 solid hours of cutting and as I compare the movement of the linkages between the new one and the one I had to stop using due to noise, etc, it's amazing the difference. I have a feeling that just about every bearing and/or sleeve will need to be replaced when I break it down in a couple of months. I need to dig into the diagrams and start ordering parts.
  19. Thanks guys. Just wrapped up 3 hours of cutting and so far, so good. It was nice not having a floor full of sawdust when I was done.
  20. Hello Braintrust, A question.... I tried searching but couldn't find anything in prior comments, so I apologize if this has been asked. Point me to the thread if that's the case. As I'm awaiting my new saw to arrive any minute I went ahead and set up my Dust Deputy and was planning on plugging the shop-vac into my foot pedal along with my saw so that it only comes on when I'm cutting rather than running non-stop for a couple of hours straight. Is this practical? Will it burn up the shop-vac or anything? Thanks for any thoughts or advice. Iggy
  21. Hi Scott, I would like to take you up on your offer. I won't need to do it right away as I have a new saw on the way, but would very much appreciate the maintenance lesson. My wife's dad lives "near" you in southern VA, so it may be that I coordinate a trip when she wants to go visit him. I'll be in touch. Thanks again for offering. Yet another example of the great community we have here. Iggy
  22. Good info, thanks Charley. Between Youtube and our resident knowledgebase I'm sure I'll come close to not destroying my saw. Which one of you wants to come to the beach for a weekend to do this for me? LOL
  23. Just for you Len, I won't take my current saw to the repair shop and I'll take the time in January after the holidays to watch some tutorials and will learn how to maintain the DW so that I don't find myself in a bad situation again. I'm not completely clueless when it comes to mechanical work, however I won't be surprised if I end up with a box of parts that I end up taking to the repair shop with a horribly disfigured saw asking if they can put Humpty Dumpty back together again. ;-)
  24. Well, I bit the bullet and ordered a DW from Amazon and have it coming Saturday. With any luck it gets here during daylight hours and I won't lose too much cutting time. I only have to travel twice a year for the day job and of course next week is one of those times. Very rude of them to interrupt my cutting and craft events. ;-)
  25. Hey Steve, Yes, the EX is still available but even if he was available tomorrow, it's a 6 hour round trip and I'd lose a day of cutting. I learned my lesson. I'll buy a spare DW this winter.
