  1. Thanks for the info. The switch you have is exactly the one I was looking at but thought i I would see what experienced scrollers had to say.
  2. I have another newbie question. It seems from what I have read and seen on the internet, that most scrollers consider a foot switch almost a "necessary accessory". It also seems there are two types: the deadman and the on/off. I understand the basic difference between the two, and the fact that opinions are like noses, but is there some reason to pick or favor one type over the other that I should consider before buying one? Thanks. Jim
  3. I would love to be able to do the kind of work Brian and others do. You guys are real artists. Well, back to trying to cut a straight line.
  4. Sorry for my last reply. I just now noticed that the original thread was date last July. Oh well, better late than never
  5. For anyone, like me, who is not very mechanically inclined or brave about opening up the machine, I just came across a youtube video last night of a guy demonstrating how to make this exact fix. I don't recall the URL but a quick search of "Dewalt dw788 should find it.
  6. Nice to meet you, Bruce. Enjoy your retirement.
  7. Sean, You story and mine are almost identical right down to the saw we are both tuning up (Dremel 1680). I've been inactive for about 12 years before the itch returned. Anyway, welcome to this warm and helpful group. You will find all you need here. Jim
  8. I am just getting starting again after a 12 year layoff from scrolling. So, I am also a newbie and any advice I would give should be taken with a grain of salt. I agree with all the suggestions given already. But I enjoy studying a good book as well as watching the videos. So, the two books I have read (and found useful) are The New Scroll Saw Handbook by Patrick Spielman and the Scroll Saw Workbook by John Nelson. I especially like the workbook because each chapter leads you through a different project. Just my opinion and your mileage may vary.

    Hello from NC

Brian, Thank you very much for the invitation and I sure may take you up on it. I saw the story on your club and the Christmas tree project in the Scroll Saw magazine...nice write up. I was also glad to hear about Klingspor since the only woodworking store in Greensboro (Woodcraft) closed up shop and moved away. I definitely need to get over there and check that out. Thanks again and I will probably see you next year. Jim

    Hello from NC

Thanks for the welcome to all of you. Brian, I used to live in Winston many, many years ago. Now I am in Greensboro.
  12. Don, I did check out the Excelsior and the price, after the currency conversion, was pretty good (better than the Excalibur). The problem with that saw would be the cost of shipping such a heavy crate from Canada to the southeast US.
  13. Thanks. I had read some stuff on the Axminster sold in the UK but I have never heard of the other two. I will check them out but I'm guessing they would be hard to find in the US.
  14. Thank you for passing that along, Scott. I guess I should be considering other options. Maybe the Jet or a DeWalt 788...it seems a lot of scrollers here like them.
  15. I apologize if this has been asked a gazillion times...I did a search that didn't turn up anything. Basically, I was wondering if anyone knew when, or even if, General International is planning to start selling the Excaliburs again. I am just getting back into sawing and am using my old Dremel 1680. I would really like to upgrade to an EX-21 or something comparable. Thanks. Jim

    Hello from NC

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am sure I will have many questions as my journey continues. Jim
  17. Hi. My name is Jim and I live in North Carolina. I got my saw about 12 years ago but have not touched it for several years now, just too busy. Now I am retired and am ready to get back into it but will be starting as a beginner again. Will probably have many questions.
