  1. Actually its quite an easy cut
  2. I found a file on Thingiverse that was meant for laser cutting but I tried scrolling it instead It reminds me of a tornado and looks quite 3D although its really flat You can get the file here https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:389075
  3. A lovely way to use up scrap wood and an excellent end result Are the shapes your own design or from a published plan and if the latter where can I get he plan ? Don
  4. If you mix the Turmeric with iso propyl alcohol rather than water it dries in seconds
  5. Those are lovely boxes, so nice I better not let the wife see them or I am going to be making small boxes for the forseeable future Don
  6. Thats something to be very proud of
  7. beautiful work
  8. Welcome Jason , I'm sure you will love it here , I have never seen such a friendly bunch of people on a forum as you will meet on here I am also new , been scrolling a couple of weeks and loving it Don In the center of England
  9. My first intarsia was the goldfish from Kathy Wise book and it came out ok but was probably the simplest pattern there is as its all from one piece of wood so it cant really fail to line the cuts up together . It was time to get out of my comfort zone so... My second attempt is Kathy's mice and cheese which was a lot more challenging as its made from more than one variety of wood so it was down to me to make them fit together properly The Mice I made from American Cherry the inside of their ears are made from Poplar ( its a nice wood to work with and the least expensive of the hard woods here in England) The cheese is also poplar and I stained it with a home made dye . I went to the supermarket and got some Turmeric spice and had read that if I mix a little with water it would make a good yellow stain. Instead of water I used Iso Propyl Alcohol ( rubbing alcohol) and the turmeric dissolved in it easily , more important is that unlike water it dries in seconds because the alcohol evaporates so fast. It goes on even and didnt streak or have dark or light patches. It also lets the grain colours of the wood show through ( not that poplar has that much colour ) The eyes again are poplar made black with a sharpie For the tails I had a bunch of plant labels made from bamboo so I used a bit from one of those which was still very strong even though it was cut to very slim dimensions The frame is a 2" deep box frame from Aldi's supermarket (on special offer this week for only £2.99 ) The intarsia is backed with 3mm MDF and I put a piece of silver card behind the completed picture I was very pleased how this one came out and it was a nice challenge Anyway , here it is
  10. Thanks everyone for your kind replies . For the last few days I have been trying another intarsia but this time tried to be a bit more adventurous. My first intarsia was Kathy Wise's Goldfish (Its on here called my my first try with the scroll saw) It was probably as easy a pattern as you can get as its all cut from the same piece of wood so really the cuts cant help but line up for my second try I have done Kathy Wise's Mice with Cheese which was more of a challenge because it uses more than one kind of wood so has to be made to fit properly I shall put it online as " My second Intarsia " . I think I'm beginning to like this scroll Sawing hobby
  11. Hi , Being new to scroll saw I'm trying the different types of scrolling to see what I like Well I have had me a try at intarsia and I liked that so now I thought I would give a 3D / compound cutting a try . I didnt think it would be very succesfull so only used a bit of 2x2 softwood from the diy shop , Didnt see the point in wasting expensive wood , but I was suprised , it came out not too bad so I will have to have another try using a nice hard wood Don
  12. I think you are all just being kind because I'm a beginner but your replies are very encouraging so thank you all
  13. Hi , I got my first scroll saw a couple of weeks back and thought its about time to stop practicing doing wiggly lines and try to make something I have Kathy Wise's book so tried to follow along with her beginners project and she said if its your first time use a soft wood to make it easier to do, so I bought a bit of Red Cedar, I hadnt seen Cedar before , I guess we dont grow it in the UK, but it cut and sanded easy and it smells great when its cut I know I have a lot to learn and you will see that in my picture but all in all I was quite pleased with my first atempt. Its had just one coat of varnish which I will rub down when its dry and give a couple more coats but here it is so far Remember its my first try so be gentle with me Don
  14. Thank you all for the lovely warm welcome Don
  15. Hi, I'm Don and have been retired 10 years and live in Redditch, for any one that doesnt know thats about 10 miles from where William Shakespear lived I have for many years been into model engineering , mainly stationary steam engines but I decided I would like to have a try at scroll sawing, I particularly like the look of wooden gear clocks and also Intarsia. I have bought a plan for a clock from Brian Law , and Kathy Wise's book on intarsia for beginers. I didnt want to pay a fortune for a top line machine like an Excaliber or Hegner untill I know I want to stick with it so for now I have bought a Schepach SD1600 F which is fitted with the flexible drive shaft for dremel atachments. I thought it might be a good idea to subscribe to a scroll saw magazine for patterns etc but we dont seem to have one in the UK. Looking on the internet I found scroll saw woodworking and crafts magazine. I tried looking at back issues online so I could see what sort of items the magazine contained before spending out on a subscription, With the postage from the USA its quite expensive. especially if its not really what I like. looking up back issues online I noticed that I couldnt find any issue to look at before issue 24 , even stranger was I allso found scroll saw workshop magazine but with that I could only find up to issue 23 , It got me wondering, as the one stops at 23 and the other starts at 24, is it the same magazine that just changed its name ? or are both magazines still running ? I wonder if any of you from the USA can answer that for me ? Cheers Don
