  1. An old discussion, but others might find this. The brass is a soft metal commonly used in bushings to allow the metal connections to move but not bind. They are commonly used in applications like motorcycle swing arms between the chassis and the swing arm (holds the rear wheel). If you find excessive blade breakage at the bottom arm, it's likely the blade isn't pivoting properly.
  2. So I posted a chess pattern I'm working on, I don't think it's gotten many looks. I don't know if there is a way to see the number of times a post has been seen in this form. Really looking for any opinions. It's a bit long winded, but it's a set paying homage to the Austin Cox aluminum chess sets from the 60's. If anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to listen to them. Here's a link. http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/31923-im-working-on-a-simplified-chess-pattern-based-loosly-on-a-mid-centrury-modern-looking-for-opinions-and-ideas-on-the-knight
  3. Interesting, I now have both a PS Wood 21" and a DeWalt 788, I hope I can work with these very good saws. It's interesting you mention a 12 volt saw though. I live on Solar electric! I know some who have smaller 12 volt systems who try to run everything on 12 volt. I'll add this bit of info for reference. Not sure what type of saw the 26" is, it was just an impulse buy. it needs an insert, I haven't checked to see if it's the same size as my Craftsman. Likely something that will live in my old vinyl garage until I have a sale looking for another impulse buyer...lol.
  4. So a quick up date, the parts were shipped out very quickly and received in 3 days. As I mentioned I received a sort'a free DeWalt 788(V1), Payment for a debt I didn't expect to collect! I set it up on a wood work table inside and have been fooling around with it. It seems to have a bit more vibration than the PS Wood (I'm going to call the saw by it's current name). Of course it's not a fair comparison as the PS Wood was on a concrete floor and the DeWalt on a wooden table. Both were a lot better than my original cheap saw. The DeWalt is also a bit lighter (I think) the PS wood says a shipping weight of 85 lbs, but I think it's around 65 (guesstimate) It has a massive table, but it's made of aluminum also has a stand attached. I'm learning, I've heard aggressive being used in 2 terms, the cutting speed of the saw as well as the front to back motion and speed/stroke. From what I've read, the DeWalt has a lot of front to back motion and a 3/4 stroke and can run a bit faster. The PS Wood has a 1" stroke and a similar front to back motion, just from eyeballing and runs a bit slower speeds. I've lost the link/article but I understand there is a bit of adjustment in keeping the distance in the tensioner and the blade side can effect the front to back motion. If someone has read this and can point me to it, that would be neat. I love the mechanics of things. Unless I can make room, or we have a mild winter, I may not have much more info on the PS Wood until spring and my un-heated space.
  5. Well found something interesting, The PS Wood web site only shows a few parts when you go to "Scroll saw parts" just the things that have normal wear and tear, bellows, belts and blade holders. The does come with a 5 year warranty. So I was wondering what if I needed a bushing... I checked out the 'exploded' diagram of parts and under that listing they show pretty much every part on the saw available! I'm posting this here because I found information hard to come by for this saw. I'll try to do a more in depth review when I get it cleaned up and running. NONE of this is a review of the saw it's self, other than it has the feel of a good piece of equipment. FWIW - I may be sort-of given a DW788 so I'll have a standard to compare it to! http://www.pswood.com/all-21-parts/
  6. I was not opposed to the belt, I had quickly learned that a table saw had much less vibration working off a belt or at least I found switching from a direct drive to a belt drive made a huge difference. I think that was the norm. The changing speeds is done with the saw off, but is simple, just rolls into place. and is accessed from above the base. I guess there is a 2nd pully at the bottom to give a wider selection of speeds. PS Wood was very nice and has parts at very reasonable prices and 'too cheap' shipping. I can tell they will be great to work with. They sent me a PDF of the manual for the asking. A replacement urethane belt was $9, 'V' belt was $9, Bellows diaphragm $4.50, spare lower blade holder $6 and shipping? $3.50!!! http://www.pswood.com/scroll-saws/
  7. I saw a similar posting earlier in this thread. Just to put this to rest, this is certainly a stand alone tool! The motor is in the section under the base. I had thought/hoped it was a section that the legs were mounted to, perhaps to make it a table top unit. I wanted to take the legs off for transport, but what looks like a rectangular base, actually used the legs to 'build' the corner. It uses the same parts as the Sakura or PS Wood saw, so I'm sure it was some kind of relabeled situation.
  8. Well I'm semi retired and wanting to stay busy. Scrolling seemed like and interesting thing to try my hand at.... I've done some other odds and end of wood craft, but nothing this challenging, Shape signs from fence boards and pallet wood. It started with a Craftsman middle of the road saw and quickly realized I'd like a quieter saw with less vibration. I've recently purchased a "Total Saw" 21" which is a PS Wood saw (or Sakura by an earlier name) It's a very nice quiet saw with seriously tiny vibrations! I need to clean it up a bit, put on a new rubber belt (it's a belt driven saw...). I might also want to add the more current "toolless" chuck on it. I've also, for no good reason, picked up a 26" older saw for $20, running, but needing a bit of help.
  9. That makes me feel better about my purchase! I just bought a "Total Shop" labeled 21" scroll saw ($130)and found this thread while getting information about it. As parts are interchangeable with the PS Wood and Sakura, I'm figuring it was either a drop ship relabeled saw for "Total Shop". or a custom run. I say custom run because mine came with a quick release head that is a bit different than the current one. I may add the current one (quick release head/chuck) in the future, after I see how serviceable this one is. This saw is very quiet and some what heavier built than other saws. I'll post some photos of the Chuck and perhaps add to the data base of this saw. I need to order a new rubber belt and likely a spare 'V' belt.
