@heppnerguy @carl1 @Fedido @FrankEV Thank you, guys...sorry it took so long to respond...been busy closing on my new house, moving in, setting up the 2-car for a shop, furniture shopping...etc...you know the drill... I do believe in buying the best within available funds...except for some early mistakes I've made (like others) I've managed to line up a good set of woodworking tools. I had posted another thread where I bought an RBI Hawk 220 and love it. Now I'm anxious to get scrolling. I've since put it on wheels like some of the other machines I have in the shop and that works well. Thanks again for the welcome and advice...Nick

I've used Porter Cable (usually) and some Diablo, (8-hole)...I've used the PC since my first ROS...Dewalts and Bosches. I buy them locally in 25 and 50 pack... They don't fill up unless used on poly, varnish, waxes or similar finishes...for that I use my Stanley 80 scraper or card scraper...(until my thumbs complain) -
Is it possible that you may have loosened the tension handle too far and may have lost the crown nut on the bottom side of the upper arm, in line with the post holding the blade tension handle...? (see part 263T in parts list and diagram)

Evaporust...I will definitely put it on my shopping list... I restored a Lion miter knife, and other oldies, with a 50/50 acetone/ATF solution, wet paper, rust slurry and elbow grease...now I know better for my future "ole arn" finds... ...but I have to say, I would never have thought of molasses...

220 vs 220 Ultra...are they the same saw...?

Thank you...the saw does have the two position lower arm and I am anxious to see the difference in cut. I'm thinking I'll be using the less aggressive cut position. Like you, I can't see using the more aggressive position for anything that needs a straight up/down cut...maybe if I were resawing and didn't want to light up the bandsaw... (no offense to anybody that does...I don't yet know enough what I should and should not do) -

I just heard back from Bushton (Hope) and it looks like I do have the Ultra...and based on the serial number it was built in 1996... So...question answered...thanks for reading... More questions to follow... -
So up until I looked at the RBI site to grab the manual for my serial number I thought the 220 and the 220 Ultra were two different saws. Now I don't know...I had that impression, I guess, from all the reading and searches and thinking they were two different saws. Are they different or is it the same saw...? The manuals page on the RBI site shows Ultra for my serial number (30935) and I don't see a plain "220"... I've put a call into Bushton but no answer yet...just voice mail (guess I'm joining the crowd on this) Thanks for putting up with my basic questions...I'm sure they'll get harder in the future...

Just finished watching a video of a gentleman showing how to practice with a practice pattern...not the important point though... He stated that all blades are stamped...ALL blades are stamped...? He explained this when he demonstrated "drift" that the blade will always cut more on one side... Are all blades stamped and do not cut straight, meaning it cuts more on one side...? When I get home I'm gonna have to try this again...the one piece I cut "seemed" that the blade cut straight with no drift...gonna use a straightedge on the next attempt...

A friend of mine needed a portable table saw...I gave him a Skil I wasn't using...he gave me the Walker that he was no longer using for mortises. He had upgraded to the Jet mortiser...I think I walked away with the better deal...

Now that I have a saw, rather than hit 'n miss on buying blades, I thought I would ask you for a good source for blades and a recommendation on which manufacturer(s) you prefer. For now, I need some blades to practice with...maybe a variety of "beginner" blades to make some dust...? Thanks in advance... (more questions to follow)

Motor...Dayton DC Motor...8U186 V-notch...zero wear, yes nylon washer Front tension lever...yes Serial Number 30935...looked at Bushton site...Hawk 220VS ULTRA Serial:26350-????? Not sure if that means it's an Ultra...sticker says Model 220 VS Both arms, rear brackets are thick aluminum, table is aluminum... Will add pics soonest...

So I broke down and picked up an RBI 220...first scroll saw...seller has had it for 5 years, bought it from original owner and thinks it's about 12 years old or so. Now to disassemble, clean all the nooks n crannies, lube 'er up and let 'er rip... Are there any distinguishing characteristics that would help to age it...? Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the welcome...Yes, the type 2 is a Taiwan machine. I don't think I would buy the newer 788 as I'm trying to keep my money in the US. It seems all the good ole saws are worth waiting for...and I have plenty of time to wait for the right deal as you suggested. I joined the Village so I could browse through the threads and finally pick a model to watch for. There's a couple of RBI's I'd like to go look at and a more expensive Type 1, a couple of Hegners but they're smaller than I want. It's been recommended to me to stay above the 20" mark. Not sure that's valid yet as I will mostly be making box tops and some templates... I'll be narrowing soon...

Thanks, Melanie...when I started looking for a saw I couldn't help but think of the EX's...then more research and found out about the different phases (history) and the different colors. There is a purple 30" for sale but a bit out of my budget and I don't know that I'll ever need 30" of saw. Thanks for your reply...

Thank you Spirithorse...sound advice... Certainly not long-winded for me...I'm a dreamer too. Only problem is I started dreaming later than I should have. I guess it's never too late though... Thanks for the reply and the recommendation...shopping for these babies sure is tough. Still looking for the perfect deal.

Thank you all for the warm welcome...I'm anxious to finish my search for a saw so I can get started making all the early mistakes. It's a tough time right now and I can appreciate that sellers would rather stay from too much contact so much of my "shopping" has been texts and phone calls. I have time and am still learning through reading, videos and forums. It's a new language and new part names so it'll take a while yet. Thank you again...Nick

Thank you, Marg..I did read about some of the excess/aggressive cutting on the Dewalts...not sure how prevalent that is but one of the saws I'm shopping for is earlier Type 1's. If I'm patient enough, I'm sure one will come along. For now I'm trying to shop for the ONE saw that will do everything...I suppose I may wind up with more than one (what did Kevin call it...? A "managery...?)
