Looks Great, I am 63 yrs old

A number of years ago my first grandson Cedric was stillborn. I put off making an urn for him because I originally wanted to turn one on the lathe but my skill level on the lathe has never progressed enough to do the project justice. In the meantime I picked up scrolling and came up with this for his ashes. It is made of Birch and Walnut. I am pleased with the result.

My granddaughters birthday box. I asked her what her favourite animal was and she said she could not choose "I like them all" so I chose lol. The pattern is adapted from Steve Good's "Fancy horse" pattern. The box top and bottom are baltic birch and the sides are white pine. I cut the box part on the bandsaw. I will fill it with smarties because at her age that is probably all she will care about

I use a pattern from Steve Good, but I can see myself doing it freehand next time, after you have done a few it's more like having a rough guideline.

Every year I do 2 family puzzles one for each of my children's families.

She did but I think she liked the candy even more lol, the other grandkids let me know their favourite animals though

I made this for my granddaughter's 7th brithday. Her favourite animal is the Panda bear.

Just to be clear Canadians don't brag... lol First ever portrait. My sister's cat died recently, unexpectedly and this will be a gift to her. I just need to frame it. Thanks to Grampa who did the pattern for me.

I started scrolling 3 years ago ( I do other woodwork as well) I am so amazed at how useful and versatile this tool is! This week I found a new use for it, it's excellent for cutting foamboard cleanly! I have cut Acrylic and all manner of wood products. I wonder has anyone cut Tagua nuts? I was thinking I might be able to do some very intricate jewelry if I cut the nut into slices and scroll it.

This a Steve Good Design. I made it from 1/4-inch maple veneered MDF (left over from some floating shelves I made), this was the first time I ever scrolled anything MDF, and I was shocked at how evenly you cut through it. I have excellent dust collection so that was not a bother. Being MDF I had to paint it. I like to place things like this around the house somewhere and wait to see how long it takes my wife to notice it.

Made this for my granddaughter's 3rd birthday. First time cutting acrylic sheet. Piece of cake! Reading about problems cutting it had me terrified beforehand!

Thanks, Bill, I am not upset about the things I didn't like, it's all part of learning as you point out. I got some great tips by mentioning them. Being relatively new at this I can't always foresee what the end product will look like. I learned a lot on these projects, one thing I didn't mention was the "trickiness" of scrolling thin Oak. I found the pronounced grain made it challenging, constantly changing resistance. It's a great hobby so happy I gave it a try again. I tried it in my thirties with a lousy scrollsaw, I had less patience then and it was very frustrating. Fast-forward 30 years and I have some patience and a decent tool; made a huge difference. It is a very underrated tool! Once again thanks for the input! Brian .

Thanks, I was planning on giving the fish box to a friend who is battling cancer. I wasn't sure it was nice enough.

I just finished these 3 boxes, which incorporate several firsts for me: I wanted to try scrolling cheap wood, so these are glued-up white pine 1.5 inches. They are the first boxes I have scrolled. The fish is the first "fine" scrollwork I have done, would you call it Fretwork? not sure I don't know any other scrollers let alone experienced ones I can ask. What do I like about these boxes? The thin walls are amazing. The Oak tops of the round boxes. The ease with which the tops (oak) of the circular boxes swing (I waxed the dowels), The close but easy fit of the fish box, I like just taking it apart and putting it back together. What do I dislike? The plywood tops and bottoms look ugly to me. I like the pine but a solid hardwood would look better. The fish box would look better if it was not as tall, sometimes less is more. This scrolled fish needs to contrast the top of the box more. Some things I thought of doing (but didn't do this time): Flocking the inside of the boxes, painting or staining the walls of the boxes, and a magnetic catch for the round boxes to hold them in place when closed. I made this for a different granddaughter and must admit I love it! I can't stop playing with it! Simple but very entertaining! ( my wife is playing with it for the video, she is not my granddaughter!) I got this one from a book, but Steve Good also has an acrobat pattern. acrobat.mp4

Creative use for wife's lipstick! In the interest of preserving marital bliss maybe ask Santa for some of these if you plan on using dowels frequently! dowel centers
