  2. Hey Everyone! In this fun scroll saw project video, we make this amazing Bald Eagle Portrait for the upcoming 4th Of July Holiday in America! The design is from the old Creative Woodworks & Crafts Magazine March 2005 Issue and uses 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch material. If anyone knows the pattern designer please let me know so I can credit them properly. Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate
  3. Hey Everyone! In this fun video we finish the Bale Eagle Portrait I started back on April 22nd at the Klingspor 8th Anniversary in Asheville NC. The design is from the Ultimate Book Of Scroll Saw Patterns By Fox Chapel Publishing and since the project was 75% complete, I decided to finish it on a Wednesday and even throw in some live scrolling! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate
  4. I found this pattern here. I'm sorry I can't remember who to give attribution too. This one has 50 holes to drill, double the last on. Fingers crossed I can do it justice. I've tried several methods so far, directly marking the wood is the most comfortable for my eyes to see and follow the line. I've tried tape, and paper in various combos. This one seems the most promising for me at this point.
  5. I made two wooden eagles using pretty much the same pattern. For these two projects I used my own pattern, rather than a professional pattern. I wanted a simple pattern that required only 4 pieces of wood for each eagle. Here are the two final eagles. The first eagle is 8.5" wide x 3.5" high. The second eagle is 10.5" wide by 6.5" high. Eagle 1 - final Eagle 2 - final Pattern for Eagle 1. Pattern for Eagle 2. Notice it is slightly modified. I drew more feathers on the eagle's left wing, which is on the right side of the pattern. All the 'in progress' photos below were taken while I was making the first eagle. I used the same steps making the second eagle. I used two kinds of wood: walnut for the wings and body, oak for the head and tail feathers. First I glued the pattern to the wood using light duty spray adhesive. Then I cut the pieces on a scroll saw. This shows all four pieces cut, but some are too thick. I sanded them for the correct thickness on a belt sander. Next step was shaping. For this step I used a Dremel rotary tool, but mostly files and sandpaper. Shaping the eye, beak and area around the beak was very challenging. I glued the parts together. Please be aware that I did not set them on this plywood board while gluing or while glue was drying. I put them on a plastic sheet. I filled gaps with sawdust mixed in glue. I was able to make dark filler with walnut sawdust and light filler with oak sawdust. After the glue/sawdust mixture dried, more sanding was required. Next step was painting talons, beak, and eye. I have since learned that wood dye works pretty well for intarsia pieces. Next time I hope to use dye, in order to get better colors. Last step was two coats of shellac as top coat.

  8. Someone found my facebook business page for coins, and asked if I could put a Name in the empty spot up top of the butterfly coin. That empty space always seemed awkward for me, but I wasn't sure how to fill it. I really really don't like fonts that have a line under them to hold them together, but found some name art on another facebook page that I did like. The font that I thought flowed together nicely is called "Birds of Paradise." That font is free for personal use or $49 if you are going to use it to make money. I'm sure most use this for free regardless, but my conscience said to pay the artists, so I did. The other coin is the Eagle Saw that I had left in the Acetone (forgot about) and needed to be polished to finish it off. I've been randomly giving coins away from my personal Facebook page for sometime now, but have switched to the business page so that all my friends that don't care about crafts or coin cutting don't have to see all my coin posts. I'll probably give the Eagle coin away on the business site sometime soon. When I sell a coin, I get money and that is my reward, but when I make someones day with a gift, that actually makes me feel good. -------Randy

  10. We have about a 12x12 piece of live edge walnut that we want to scroll saw a deer head or deer design in to attract buyers at a local hunting show. Any suggestions? We would also accept a big bass or an eagle.
  11. I got it all done with several coats of finish. It measures 20 x 32 and has 230+ pieces. I've got 45 hours in it. The woods used were. Aspen, aromatic red cedar, poplar, walnut, wenge, yellowheart, northern white cedar, honey locus and oak. The P.O.W flag and letters are oak that I ebonized and the blue is aspen that has been dyed. Everything else is natural colors of the wood. I really enjoyed making this one. It will be entered into our county fair later this summer. Update- The fair is over and I placed first.

    Eagle Head

I'm liking these. I think the eagle will compliment the wolf. I'm think of doing a moose next. I'm trying to find out where I got the pattern from. If anyone knows, please tell me. Thanks for looking.
