We have a large covered porch . We also have 3 visiting neiborhood cats that stay here outside only ,our old dog tolerates them . ants and our dog eat too much of it so I moved it up on a ss long table on the porch ,ants followed .So I set a tray a little larger than the cats pan under the pan set on a dish rag to stablilize the pan and added 2 cups of water in the tray to form a moat and added dawn dish soap at the waters edge all the way around the tray ,no more ants ,Plus after about two weeks I noticed ,the flys that came to eat the cat food seldom left as they seemed to drink the water and expire . we eat out on the porch alot in the summer and the fly problem of yore is gone to their happy hunting ground before we get there .Nice free fly trap ,more effective than any comm. traps I have tried . Clean with a hose and reset about every two weeks . Heres some pix.

You can see by the one pix ,it's very effective ,this is about the sixth time I've changed it this yr .first time I thought about taking catch results .might slow down the mousing ,or maybe not ,might make the cats catching easier if the mice come to eat the cat food ! Let me know how it goes!

I won't use cat food. I'll use sweet feed or just the corn I feed the peacocks.

Experiment... But at this time of year. don't matter much...

That may be right ,BUT cat food has the odor flys are attracted to , and it doesn't spoil ,will lose some aroma after a while ,at least thats been my experience.

Thanks, I'll do the cat food on the porch and use the barn for experimenting.

Also, part of rhe barn building is my shop where I may also use the cat food.

I hate it when a pesky fly lands on my head as I am scrolling.

I've got a different bug problem and i think it some kind of bugs i brought home in the wood,.They are about an 8th inch long very tubular  ,brown to black they fly and are very anoiying..I have fly strips in the room and they are just coverd with them. They seem to like to fly in my nose too.I've fogged many times  but the hanging strips seem to control them good.there's always that trooper that will not get caught and bothers you still.they are fast too.

If you get a large tray and put your chair in the middle when youre scrolling, then It'll stop the flies landing on your head

Well ,I just had to empty again ,loaded as cooler weather gets here drops of dramatically .I hate those cheap pull out fly strips ,they are always in the way and unintended stuff gets caught and then thats a mess .To each his own ,just a free fly trap that works well for me ! Larry you could always mount a venus fly trap on your hat ! heehee!

We use  zip lock bags filled half way with water and hang them up in areas we wanted to keep the flies away.  Worked!  We had chickens and the flies were everywhere.  Not sure how it worked, but work it did.

Open? Zipped shut? Plain water? Lazy chickens?

We tried that and the flies didn't change their habit except occassionally they sat on the bag of water.

I have heard that the prism effect it causes ,screws up their vision ,and they avoid the area ,because of their unique 360 degree vision ,operates, like a visual radar jammer ! Sounded reasonable ,a clean snow globe on the picnic table is supposed to work ,too! Have you ever used a clear class bottle of water  for a magnafying glass ? Same effect might give them migranes !!  If you happen to have an old   disco globe ,that should also work !! same principle !
