JustLarry Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 I am coordinating start up of a community woodworking club. Start up meeting will be on Jan 19. Have 20 people planning on making the meeting. Just wondering if any of you have experience in starting a club that you would share suggestions or advise on. The first reply to announcement was from lady that wrote "I am wanting to learn woodworking." Have scrollers, carvers, turners, cabinet makers and furniture makers planning on being there. Looking at meetings to be around two hours long with a "show and tell" giving members chance to show off what they are working on or have finished. Want to have at least one community project for the group to work on - Christmas toys for children at local hospital, making funeral flag display cases for families, etc. One that plans on being at meeting is willing to let his shop be used. He cannot use the tools due to medical problems and stated the tools need to be used. And, wanting club to cause interest in other non-woodworkers. My church is sponsoring the club and will provide area for meetings.Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions you give. Larry Quote

Looks like you will have a good variety of woodworkers there Hope they can all share some of their talents Having a community project is a great idea Only thing I have for you right now is "Keep it Fun" and it should all work out Good Luck and please keep us posted on how it goes Fab4 Scrolling Steve and JustLarry 2 Quote
Kepy Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 Sounds like you are off to a great start. In addition to the "Show and Tell", the group I used to belong to also held drawings for donated items at each meeting. They donated everything from finished projects to spare tools or supplies. Doug Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 No suggestions just respect for your energy and incentive. Hope it goes well for you. You might make a few boat "oars" as awards or gifts for those who share the laboring oar with you. JustLarry 1 Quote
JustLarry Posted January 14, 2015 Author Report Posted January 14, 2015 Thanks for the encouragement and tips. Has taken almost a year to get from the thought of starting to announcing the start. Larry Quote
