most of these were completed with the other pens I posted. These are all slimline pens. I cut the designs into the first two pens - 1 hearts filled with red flocking and 2 a cross filled with white flocking. the last four pens are made with the acrylics(polyester resin) that I make myself as well.

Very nice work!

The first question is: How do you make your own acrylic? I have a son who makes pens and the blanks are even spendier than the pen kits; so the answer will be both appreciated and put to use!

#2 Where do you get the raw material for the making the acrylic?

I use a Clear Polyester Casting Resin. then add colorant to the resin for my colors. The colorant I use is mica powder. you can buy the resin from local craft store like hobby lobby & Michaels. It's what I started using but found it cheaper on the web. The stuff from the crafts stores is by casting craft called Clear Polyester Casting Resin.  I now buy it by the gallon, its called Silmar 41 Clear Polyester Casting Resin.  a quart at Michaels is roughly $ 35. plus the MEKP (hardener) the gallon I buy is $35 plus shipping and includes the MEKP it comes to about 45 a gallon. here are some links to products I have used

http://www.woodnwhimsies.com/kastkit.html  - have not bought this from them, but I do buy a lot of kits from them. great to deal with.

http://www.michaels.com/castin-craft-clear-polyester-casting-resin/M10558114.html - I first started with this to see if I was going to like casting.

http://www.douglasandsturgess.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DAS&Product_Code=PR-1009&Category_Code=POLYESTERRESINS  -used to buy here but found it cheaper with shipping, this is in California

http://www.carbonfiberglass.com/Resin-Systems/clear-casting-resin/Silmar-41-Clear-Polyester-Casting-Resin-Gallon.html  - this is where I buy from. they are in South Carolina (closer to me)

http://www.coastalscents.com/make-your-own/mica-powder.html - this is what I use to color my resin, it is also used in makeup

some mix by weight (resin and MEKP) - I mix so many drops of MEKP per ounce.

I have several friend come to me to buy my blanks because they are cheaper and if they want certain colors mixed I can generally do it. Currently I have 74 color combination I mix with lots more I could do.

Hope this answers some questions if you have more or need help just contact me.

I did have a video floating around some where showing me casting a pen blank

Ralph I found the videos. These are old videos because I was still using the resin from Michaels and an old measuring system- guess work for the coloring. Now when I make blanks I have a "Recipe" book that I keep so all my colors are the same time after time or very close. the videos are here - http://www.woodturningvideos.com/2011/05/making-a-ribbon-pen-blank/
