I have discovered some information that I can't determine if it is good or bad.  I'm sure that Rob Roy will have something to say.  I always thought that I was English on my Mother's side of the family.  Recently I found some info that indicates that my 3greatgrandmother may be Scottish.  Supposedly she is the daughter of a Lord Allen who had an English coachman named John Phipps.  The two ran away to the US some time before 1848.  He disappeared after he left for the California gold fields.

I understand that Scots who leave their native land do frequently disappear.  I think the real test of possible Scottish ancestry is whether you have any suppressed desire to remove your underclothes and wear a skirt and carry one of those guy purses..  I understand it is a genetic thing and cannot be suppressed.  I trust Roy will correct me if I am wrong and he can probably give you detailed information on Lord Allen and his coachman.

Well, Doug and Bob that will be a nice research program since it's too cold to go in the shop. Could be interesting to see what turns up. He's probably some rogue who got kicked out of Scotland for filling his SPORRAN with ILL GOTTEN GAINS     .

AS for the Guy Purse Doug, you'd be surprised what you'd find in one. Another thought. When it's cold, of course you put your hands in you pockets. NO POCKETS in a SPORRAN, so where do the HANDS GO. You can work that one out for yourself.

   .

Rob Roy.

This should get interesting!......I think I'll hide and watch!

Watch this space Steve.   .

Lord Allen ...Scottish I suppose, where does the English coachman John Phipps come in?

Did he accompany the Lord Allen to California?

Did John have something to do with Lord Allen's disapperance? Did Phipps steal Allens sporran?

Did G'Granny remarry an English Coachman? Deep Mystery.

By the way, I'm an "Allen" Are we related?

Carl, can you imagine the scenario with a big hairy Scotsman in a crowded street somewhere in the world being accosted by A PICKPOCKET. I'm sure the outcome would be interesting to say the least!!!
