Doug Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Just curious. Lorenzo's (Larry) post on the Murphy bed he built so there would be more room for spouse sewing and quilting made me think I have seen numerous comments about spouse hobbies and crafts and thinking that many of those comments indicate many of us have quilters for spouses. My spouse is passionate about her quilting and generally is out of town at least a weekend a month for quilting retreats and usually has at least one week long or longer quilt retreat each year. A fair amount of woodworking went into building display boards for working on patterns, thread racks for walls, and slotted and angled pieces for all of the plastic measuring pieces or whatever they are. A castered cabinet doubling with something made for ironing on top of it was also made. I do not begin to understand it but just try to build what I am told. What I do understand is that her skill greatly exceeds mine and I am in awe of the finished product. I also built shelving in a closet to hold bolts of fabric and when it comes to fabric I understand quilters are hoarders. I also learned that a fat quarter is not a body part and that gift certificates to favorite quilt shops are better than jewelry or chocolate. bobscroll 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Holy cow!! You know my wife? How long has this been going on?? The good part about it is her hobby is more expensive than mine. She can not complain about what I spend. Doug and keefie 2 Quote
LarryEA Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Jelly Rolls and Log Cabins, Joanns Fabric Shop and quilters magazines. Making a quilt from my prospective is an engineering feat. Each one is beautiful. Yes, my wife is a quilter! She has her quilting room and I build thing for her. Doug 1 Quote
spirithorse Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Hi, Doug, I hate to break the bad news to you but, think about it. If you had to build a closet and storage for the supplies, that means the supplies are not getting used. If she's gone that often and for that long and doesn't bring home a quilt, she's having an affair!Okay, just joking around. My dad also had to build his wife (my step-mother) a bunch of tables, quiilt racks, closets and designate one room specifically for quilting. God Bless! Spirithorse Doug 1 Quote
amazingkevin Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Being a quilter has got to be equal to being a HAN's scroller Doug 1 Quote
Larry A. Blakely Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Guess this confirms we're in the same boat! lol. She makes them for family and used to attend a quilting guild but being a cancer survivor has slowed her participation some. bobscroll, Doug, Phantom Scroller and 1 other 4 Quote

EarltheScroller Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Yep...my wife is a quilter. She uses what used to be the guest bedroom but just recently sold the bed because she doesn't have enough room. She said we'll get a couple air mattresses for guests! They'll sleep on the floor....sorry folks...we don't have many overnight guests so that's the way it is. I have an alcove off the garage...she has a whole room. But if she's happy, I'm happy!!! Kepy Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 I have had my Mother with me since my Dad passed and she is a quilter so I know all about the things you get to make and then her friends also want one or two or three. Then her favorite quilt shop says I could sell those so make me a dozen. A plus though is that you can often find fabric that will make backing for some fretwork. She is 95 now and in bad health so the sewing room is closed off with the vents closed to cut down on heating and mainly used for storage. Doug 1 Quote
