I know this may sound silly but I just ventured down to this forum. I had been more or less just hanging around in the general scroll sawing forum. Anyway, since I found this, I thought I'd chime in and say that I dabble in woodworking and have been trying to learn both woodcarving and now scroll sawing. So, I guess I'll be bouncing back and forth here. If anybody wants to chat with me, let er rip!

Hey, what's up. Got any hobbies Ray? ;)

I got into wood working by refinishing old furniture, making sapling rocking chairs then I found scrolling.

Would like to  try intarsia sometime....

I been into all kinds of woodworking from building my home, to kayak building, ran the pen making gaunlet, made bowls, bird housed, complete set of screw drivers with rose wood handles,,,,  sail boat, not finished yet, toys, street crank organ, furniture, kinda like to try lots of things.  I am enjoying the scrolling as much as anything I have tried.

When I was doing  lathe work, I made some things out of soapstone.  It was fun to work with, been thinking on trying to use some somehow in scrolling.

Gee, soapstone! The name always confused me. Soap is soft but stone is hard.

On a lathe, must have dulled your blades. On the other hand, it could probably sharpen blades also.

Larry , there was one another about (fickle finger of fate ) from my misguided youth ,NOw it's more like the ( OLD GRAY MARE,

She AIN"T WHAT SHE USED TO BE) Reminds me of the story of the old couple rocking on the porch of the old folkes home .the wife ,cups her hand behind the husbands neck and flips him over the rail of the porch on to the lawn ,after a bit he recovers and crawls back to his chair ,and asks WHAT WAS THAT FOR? For being such a lousy lover all these years ! He returns the process and send her over the Rail ,after her crawling return asks and that ! He replies (THAT WAS FOR KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE ) SO

sometimes too much knowledge can be DANGEROUS ! Carl

Actually soap stone is pretty soft.  Softer than corian.  When you turn it it comes off like a talc power.  You can cut it on a band saw easily.  The hard part is finishing.  It is difficult to get a really shinny finish.

This little votive candle is soap stone.
