jerry1939 Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I have become intrigued with making intersecting word art. In "Tutorials" section, I printed FALCON'S Aug. 31 posting about Inkscape. Very helpful. Also am using this video: Both are extremely helpful, HOWEVER; I have never had or used Inscape. Downloaded the latest virgin (Nope sorry, I meant VERSION !! My bad.) It is version 0.91, newer than the 2 above sites. I'm slowly making my own Cheat Sheet. 2 questions I have at the moment (probably many more to follow later.) 1. On the Youtube link shown above, start at the 3:50 minute mark. I haven't found a way to delete the cutout area he shows in blue. 2. If I draw a rectangle (border) around the finished drawing, how do I round the corners? 3. How do I size the pattern, so that I can make a second one later, the same height? For all you nice people that are proficient at this, you will probably laugh so much at my ignorance that you will start to pee. DEPENDS on you what you want to do about that. Thanks a bunch for any and all help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jerry Quote
bobscroll Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 Hi Jerry, I'm not going to laugh at you! We all have to start somewhere, 2 To round the corners just after you made the rectangle, The top right corner is a handle grab it move it down or up as you want it! Remember the next time you make a rectangle it will be as you left the tool. 3 To size a pattern you use the ruler at the top of the screen, Or you can type in the size at the top, I normally set it by the ruler at the top, You can click on "file" at the top left and select "Document property's" to set it to landscape or portrait and size of your canvas. I'm not quite sure about question 1, I'll try and have a look, Bob Scrolling Steve 1 Quote
merlin Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 Oh dear Jerry............no problem mate as Bob said we all had to start somewhere and like you I had some Q's...... All panned out ok I think Bob has set you on the right path, I'm still learning myself so will not place my 2 cent's worth on Inkscape just yet....................... Above all have fun..................... Quote
Falcon Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 Jerry put the blue where you want to cut out the letter then with it selected hold shift and select the words then go to path and select difference. Hope that helps with question 1. There is no stupid question everybody started not knowing what to do! Quote
jerry1939 Posted October 22, 2015 Author Report Posted October 22, 2015 Bob, You are the man. Thanks!! Falcon, No dice. Probably due to the fact that I have a newer version (0.91). I used the Bezier and outlined an entire word. (After Object to Path etc. etc. for the entire word.) If I use the Select Tool, it selects the entire word, cannot do just the cutout. If I change color, it changed the entire word. Cannot delete anything per your instructions, or from the video. Computers are designed to be frustrating, and I am up to my ears in frustration. A big Thank You for your help so far! jerry bobscroll 1 Quote
Falcon Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I am using .91 also. I just typed NOW and used the bezier tool to make a rectangle then moved it to bottom of O in now held shift to select NOW release shift and go to path difference. I did not make NOW or the rectangle an object first that may be the problem. Hope this helps. Quote
jerry1939 Posted October 23, 2015 Author Report Posted October 23, 2015 Falcon, THANK YOU!!! I could not make your above posting work. Made the word into an object. Bingo (I'm Catholic, so am allowed to use that word.) You pointed out my problem. I was not holding Shift to Select. My eventual goal is to create a Cheat Sheet for all the great people on this site that do not have Inkscape and would like try intersecting word art. Because my IQ is the same as my age, I want to make it for a kindergarten level & beginner friendly. What I am running into now is the your great Aug. 31 posting & youtube videos all assume that we are already starting with some expertise. Will post a Beginners Cheat Sheet someday, however, I only have one gear and it's darn slow. Thanks again both of you. jerry amazingkevin and bobscroll 2 Quote

wombatie Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Jerry you are not the Village idiot, I don't even have Inkscape yet and I would certainly have more questions that you have had. Good on you for giving it a go. I will one day. Marg Quote
heppnerguy Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Jerry. After you succeed in this project. Go immediately and make another one. If you still forget what to do just go back to the video for a refresher. don't even bother to print it. then do a third pattern, They could be as simple as your last name and your first name inside it. By the end of the third time, you will probably understand all the steps by heart, then make one more.. I think the reputition will be worth your time because once you get it, you can hammer out an intersecting word pattern in about 4 minutes max.. Dick heppnerguy wombatie 1 Quote
Kepy Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Jerry, I am the same age as you and I haven't tried this yet although would like to and look forward to additional info. As to IQ being equivalent to age, does that mean as you get older you get smarter? bobscroll 1 Quote
Travis Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Jerry, where you able to get everything squared away? Quote
