Falcon Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 I am a beginner scroller as of march 2015 so since I retired this year thought I would give carving a try. Fab4 Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 Hi Falcon: I'm jealous I took a carving course years and years ago and the instructor made us start with a fish. Being the stubborn mule that I am, I refused to carve the fish. He threw me out of his class with no refund...(insert choice words here!!!) I kinda wish now, that I would have carved the fish but life goes on with no carving in site for me. Looks like you're on the right track with your crow uh, I mean Mallard Keep up the great work Fab4 Falcon 1 Quote

Any comments or suggestions is appreciated thanks,Jerry I bought the only electric carver the big box store had .I like it and it has variable hammaring ,soft med & hard. The chisels are way to soft to keep an edge, but one day i'll braze some real chisels on the old ones.I did a pineapple and a pelican on a stump(separate). Sold the pelican for $45.00.This is all before i had a cell phone(camera) in 1991.Oh the Jesus portrait Clayton did in intarsia i did with it to but just a carving! Falcon 1 Quote
oldhudson Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) Looks like you are off to a good start. I love it when someone grows their skills. Edited November 2, 2015 by oldhudson Quote
Lucky2 Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 Jerry, for a first it looks pretty good. The only thing that I would do differently, is to round over or soften the edges of the ducks body. You don't want there to be a 90% edge, where it comes up out of the wood. I do hope that you understand what I mean, other then what I stated, I think that you did a really good job. Len Quote

Would probably kept making the same mistake over and over. Thanks again. Edited November 2, 2015 by Falcon Quote
Kepy Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 Way to go Jerry. Wish you were closer as we have a local group that meets once a week to carve. Some of them are really good but that doesn't include me as I am still trying to find out what I want to do so have been trying different things. So far, I am better at starting things than finishing so maybe someday will have a finished product. Falcon 1 Quote
