Boy, I must be old!  None of that was available back when.  We had no power tools and do I ever remember needing some 1/4" wood and the hand plane.  Don't think my project ever got that thin.

I remember the hardest thing in my woodshop class was the very first exercise.  We had to take a small block of wood that the instructor gave us and square all sides with a hand plane.  Could not start anyother project until that was complete.  It was tough.
